Software/solution to index and browse pictures of digitized records?
Hello fellow genealogists!
Here is the situation: I have started genealogy research about twenty years, in particular in a small town in Italy where a branch of my family originates. The records are very well kept and easily accessible on site, but as I live abroad, I can make research and complete my family tree only during a few hours every year or so.
Luckily, a few years ago, someone in the village took the initiative to digitize all the books ("simply" took pictures of every page with a digital camera) and gave me a copy: thus I now have on my computer a little bit more than 10800 jpeg files. As I progress into my research, I have the horrible impression to go though the same pages over and over again, and I feel it is time to start having a more global approach and start indexing.
However, I don't want to go with the "cheap" approach to use a spreadsheet file: I would like to have a more "integrated" solution:
- Allowing to keep a bidirectional link between the pictures (or even a portion of the picture) and the indexed record.
- Allowing to publish and navigate easily in the results
- If possible, allowing collaborative indexing/editing/correction
The idea would be that me (or another user) could:
- make a search by name/surname/date/etc, and a click on one of the results should allow to view the matching record picture
- browse the books page by page, and see on the side the indexed names (and identify or correct a mistake if need be)
Basically, it would be similar to Family Search indexing but with a "private" set of pictures.
Has anyone ever faced the same situation / need? Do you have any software or solution to suggest?
I don't mind if it requires setting up a dedicated web server and database, or other "advanced" IT stuff.
