Metering for film

Hey all,

I’m interested in experimenting with b+w IR film and specifically shooting with either strobe or continuous light. I intend to largely be shooting at night and want to use ir to light the subject without a bright visible flash. I have a few questions to get me on the right track.

My understanding is that ir film is sensitive to the full spectrum and that using a pass filter like 720 nm is what blocks everything else and gives the ir effect. Is that right?

I’d love to use my existing flash for this, I’ve read some folks use IR pass gel to cover the light. Any other ideas?

I’ve also read some recommendations about buying an IR light online and using that. In these two cases, how does one meter IR? I use a Sekonic L-308xu and 758 and I understand both of those cut IR.

Thanks in advance!

What cacti/ succulents are these?

Through the years I’ve been gifted a handful of beautiful cactus and succulents. It occurred to me this year that I don’t know exactly what some of them are and what they want. I’ve managed to identify mistletoe cactus and coral cactus and realized I had been under watering them!

Here are some pictures of the others. One I believe is a Peruvian torch but I’m not sure. I’ve gotten blooms from it two years in a row now so I guess I’m doing ok.

Thanks for your help!
