Do you remember a corner shop in the Lair Hill area run by an elderly man in the early 80s?

Hi Portland!

I am asking for help with a historical investigation I am doing for my mom. My parents lived in the Lair Hill area of Portland roughly in the 1980 - 1983 range before moving to a different neighborhood. My mom recently told me about a small neighborhood shop in that area that she used to go into. She described it as a small “corner store” but not on an actual corner, with things like canned vegetables for sale. It was run by an extremely elderly man who she believes had a concentration camp identification tattoo on his arm. She said she regrets that she never talked to him but just didn’t know how to engage with strangers at that point in her life. We have no personal connection to this man and I don’t have any more information but I think my mom would be interested in his story. If you happen to have any information about this shop or man please be encouraged to leave a comment or send me a message.

Thank you!

ETA: Thanks reddit, you were fast! The name was Slim's Grocery - more details in the comments.

Please share personal experience with in-person Turkish language program in Istanbul

Hello all,

I am an American looking for an in-person Turkish language program for adults in Istanbul. I would like to hear from people who have personal experience with a specific school or program they can tell me about. I am open to different lengths and costs depending on the program but am only interested in in-person classes, not virtual. My goal is overall fluency in writing and speaking.

If you have personal experience with a program or school and are willing to share, here are some things I am wondering about:

  1. Overall including cost and experience, do you recommend the program?

  2. Were the teachers patient with slow learners/students who struggled?

  3. Were classes conducted in English or Turkish and did staff and teachers speak English in general?

  4. What is something you know now you wish you had known beforehand?

-Thank you!!
