This can't be legal, right?

This can't be legal, right?

Yesterday I walked by this building (corner of SE salmon & SE 10th) and that little white box on the corner started flashing red and blue, called out exactly what I was wearing and the fact that I was walking my dog, and threatened to call the police. The voice seemed robotic, not like a human talking to me through a speaker, probably some kind of AI system?

I was walking on a public sidewalk in broad daylight, I wasn't even hanging around this corner for a particularly long time. A business can't control public space like this, right?

Tips for my Dad moving to Portland (age 82)?

My Dad is going to be moving to Portland soon to be closer my wife and me. He’s recently widowed and has had to sell his house in Georgia. His monthly income isn’t huge and we are looking at apartments under $1700. Just wanted to check and see if anyone had any advice with moving an older parent out or any services/cool stuff for elderly folks. He’s healthy and mobile and hostile (kidding). He’s an old hippy, very liberal, loves weird stuff, loves the outdoors. We are off the 5 near Tigard. Anyways, thanks in advance! Let me know if you need more info. ✌️ ❤️

Am I supposed to stop at the signs with a picture of a bicycle on them or is it more of a warning to proceed with caution?

I feel stupid for asking this but I genuinely do not know what I'm supposed to do at these signs. A lot of them have pedestrians and bicycles on them and I try to be very aware of leggies and stop for them to cross but am I also supposed to yield to bikes? Specifically thinking about the crossstreet on 50th just south of Division.

Health(ier) Restaurant Options?

I’ve lived here for quite awhile and love all the food options we have, but struggle to find salads or “bowls” with lots of greens. When I travel for work, I get CAVA, so I’m really wondering if we have local options that are similar.

Where in PDX to get last minute Mexico supporter apparel?

I’m fully a bandwagon Mexico fan and want to show my support for today’s game. I know the official jerseys are sold out everywhere, but are there any spots in the PDX where I can find unofficial SWAG to wear while watching the game today?

Seeking recommendations for powered wheelchair-accessible activities?

Hi everyone,

My partner is visiting from out of state for a month, and we're looking for fun, powered wheelchair-accessible things to do in Portland. We're trying to branch out beyond the usual arcades and shopping.

So far, we've already checked out:

  • The Oregon Zoo
  • Hopscotch
  • OMSI
  • Oaks Park

We still have a lot of time to fill and I’d love to expand our horizons. Does anyone have recommendations for accessible spots, hidden gems, or events we can both enjoy? Any ideas are hugely appreciated!

Cat Tree Supply Downtown?

I just moved to downtown Portland from across the country, and would like to purchase some quality cat furniture. Whatever I get would have to be delivered. Is there a local place to go look, or am I going to have to resort to Chewy? 16lb orange tabby who just spent a week in and out of a dog sized travel kennel offered as cat tax for this post.

If I have to build what I need, I'm not above buying sisal and going custom. Hoping there's a good pet supply I'm just not seeing on google.

buying an older house in ladds addition plumbing question?

We found a great vintage property with a ton of character over in Ladd's Addition but are slightly concerned about the age of the utilities. Do these older neighborhoods typically require total sewer line replacement or are they mostly updated by now?

Pet meds for fireworks?

My poor mini schnauzer was shaking and panting last night from all the firework noise. We tried everything to drown out the noise but he was having a really hard time. Is there a vet or online source that would write compassionate prescriptions for anxiety from firework noise? With a lot of vet offices being bought out by corporate companies for profits, even one visit can go up to $150 just to be seen.

Mysterious loud booms?

A couple hours ago I started hearing these intermittent "boom" sounds. They've gotten progressively more frequent and louder as the night goes on. As of posting this they are happening at a near constant rate.

I'm starting to wonder if this has something to do with the recent shutdown of the CERN machine? Possible military exercises?

Anyone hearing these? Again, they are distinct "BOOM" sounds.

High school recommendations for a trans nd girl of color?

Hello, I’m a single mom of a 17 year old brown trans girl. We are spontaneously moving to Portland for my daughter’s senior year from Colorado. My daughter has had a really rough year starting with normal teen heartache but then her trans mentor here from a youth org she was very active in here took their own life in November. The Children’s Hospital stopped providing gender affirming care (can’t prescribe anymore) And then she went down an Epstein files rabbit hole. She’s been in an extremely dark place and I have been trying everything. I took her and her older sister on a trip to Portland this summer and I just felt her energy soften and relax and I saw her feeling safe in the world for the first time in a long time. It made me cry. And then the last day we were there I asked for a sign and she happened upon a fallen tree on a trail with the words Trans Girls Matter on it. Cried again. Couldn’t get a more specific sign. So I’m taking a huge leap and we are moving there for her senior year.

Sooo…we are late to enroll. Have to find a school, a safe place to live, all of that in the next 2 months, so asking for support from the good folks of Portland.

We are people of color. Diversity is important to me, but trans friendliness and a supportive environment and access to mental health resources are most important. My daughter is very politically conscious and I think that would be important to her as well. She tends to prefer low stimulation…doesn’t like a lot of loud noise. Also she loves to roller skate.

So looking for suggestions for high schools (diverse, trans friendly, progressive, supportive), for neighborhoods (ideally diverse neighborhoods near said schools), cat friendly housing, resources for trans youth, youth gender affirming care, and also great places to roller skate and other low sensory trans friendly teen hangouts.

Thank you so so much! Wish us luck!

Any new friends available to hang tonight?

Context; 27F. don’t wanna be alone tonight, don’t really want to celebrate/ do anything 4th of July related. Is there any event or area I could pop into? Preferably free or very low cost. It’s rough hearing all my neighbors have family & company come over, meanwhile I’m alone watching yt

Plain white tees?

My neighborhood corner store (which is more of a paraphernalia and drug store than convenience store) has a sign up that says “Plain White Tees $12”

Why? I’m tragically unhip- is this slang for something more worth $12? Is there a reason why someone would spend $12 on a single, white tshirt from a sketchy corner store?

Just curious

Was anyone else on the 6 line today when the bus driver wouldn’t stop at the bus stops?

There were about 8 of us on the bus and the driver got irritated with us when we asked what the next stop would be and got very unprofessional, and frankly, driving dangerously. He told one of the riders to get off the bus and get hit by a car. I called the police and TriMet security line after we all got off the bus.

I have been craving a good meaty Italian sandwich with all of the works (cured meats and pickled veg and onions etc).
Anyone have any recommendations?

Why did the Home Depot in Jantzen Beach stop selling hot dogs?

I just had this weird flashback to 2003, going to Home Depot and then getting delicious hot dogs at a little stand outside on the sidewalk. It was the best part of making the trip. Why did it go away?
