007 First Light

Exotic locations, beautiful women, nifty gadgets, fast cars...all boxes ticked.

We start the game with a non 00 James. Airman Bond survives a helicopter crash and his communications are taken over by MI6, from here he is instructed to scout the area in a top secret mission. Little intel and exact orders.

Now enlisted into the re-opening of the 00 program, he joins 6 other recruits in Malta undergoing rigorous training at the hands of Greenway.

When all is said and done and you are almost a 00, the game takes you through a web of mystery, interesting characters and globetrotting around the world.

The game is beautiful to look at and the detail of the world around you and the detail in which you interact with the world is on Uncharted levels. Squeezing past people in tight story scenes, brushing bannisters and walls as you pass by them, all make the world feel believable.

Fantastic gunplay, it could be argued that the game is not as action packed as it should be, but you are Bond and you do Bond things, like scanning items, eavesdropping, gadgety stuff. This stuff slows the pacing a bit but it is very in keeping with being a spy.

Music and voice acting is excellent, lots of really cool and funny back and forth between Bond and the supporting cast. At one time Ms MoneyPenny calls Bond a "bellend". Amazing.

Looking forward to more of this ReBooted Bond and the adventures that lie ahead.

The Legend Of Dragoon

Cult classic RPG and worth every bit of hype. I usually go into these games with a bit of hesitation, but Legend of Dragoon was a joy from start to finish. However, towards the end I was just wanting it finished. The pacing of the game is great, it never required me to grind at any point, there are obvious benefits to grinding, but that is just not part of my gaming style anymore.

The game starts with our main character Dart on his way home after pursuing the Black Monster, to find his home town ransacked and his friend kidnapped, for yet unknown reasons. The story takes you through many paths, rescuing princesses, stopping wars, ghost ships and so much more. To talk about everything would take up too much space, rest assured the story and the world is fantastic.

Graphically it is gorgeous for its PS1 limitations, good character models and lovely 2D prerendered backgrounds. The CGI cutscenes are so good too, but a bit few and far between.

Some great music throughout with epic scores at the big parts.

The game suffers from a few things that 12 year old me wouldnt have minded. A linear world map with no freedom/exploration. Random battles are so frustrating. And weirdly, a limited size of item storage, that one is silly.

The turn based battles are really good too, with button prompts to time your combos/additions. These are so satisfying to pull off and infuriating when you are "convinced" you nailed the press. Transforming into a dragoon is stunning, but a little lengthy, thankfully you can shorten the time in the options. And the last boss was a true spectacle.

A very expensive game physically, but weirdly it could be argued that it is worth the price tag. For me, it was a no brainer digitally at around ยฃ7 on the PS store

Cocoon ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Created by the mind behind Limbo & Inside, this is a hard one to explain without spoiling the overall message.

Controlling a nameless bug, over coming puzzles and trials, in different worlds, with different rules...that you carry around on your buggy back. This is a very unique premise that works incredibly well. Once you start to get the feel for what is happening, what worlds to jump into, what worlds to leave within other worlds and what impact each world has, this game is great. Not too long either, so a nice distraction or a cool pallette cleanser .

Graphically and Sound design is pretty bare but pretty and ambient. Both are used excellently for the type of game that it is.

I missed 3 trophies for the platinum, but I think it is definitely worth going through again to mop those up. The game is not too difficult, just requires attention and understanding of the worlds' different abilities. Boss fights are nice and simple, once you figure out the patterns but again, require a bit of patience.

Even though it is made by the same guy that did Limbo & Inside, it is very differentbut also fairly similar in its delivery. This a must play, was free on PS+ at one time and may be in your library already or failing that, it goes for cheap on the digital stores regularly ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Uncharted 4: A Thiefs End

I am a man of fortune and I must seek my fortune.

Just when Nathan Drake thought he was out of the treasure hunting game, the return of his brother Sam, drags him back in. The lost treasure of the legendary pirate, Henry Avery, is the target. A lifelong obsession of both Nate and, even more so, Sam. As they are unassumingly being led through a pirates trial that takes them from Scotland to Southern America, the reveal of Libertalia is still a standout and surreal moment in gaming.

Uncharted 2 is often held as the greatest Uncharted game, however (for me) this takes that accolade. Bigger, louder and prettier than previous entries. This is a culmination of all the other games in the series, in that all aspects have been fine tuned and bettered in every way.

Combat is fluid and challenging. All the firefight encounters are well staged and offer lots of variety and player freedom.

The open area parts are gorgeous and really encourage exploration, with loads of nik naks and treasures lying around. The level of immersion is incredible, the way Drake and his pals move through crowds in heavily populated areas is stunning, pushing and weaving their way through. Equally impressive is your companions input towards puzzles and the general banter that flys between each character. The there are the set pieces, absolutely stunning.

Epic music and that Uncharted theme is sensational. The dialogue as well is relevant and deliberate, it is always on point and never out of place. The script is just excellent and right up there with movie level writing and pacing.

A wonderful and often emotional story of love and unfinished business. The brothers Drake, is a tale that continues to deliver, every playthrough. A true masterpiece in every area.
