The Deluminator and the Taboo
It only just occurred to me that the Deluminator serves as the literary antithesis of the Taboo on Voldemort’s name.
The Taboo turns a spoken name into a weapon and a trap. It breaks protective spells, exposes the speaker, and puts people in danger. It makes them a target.
Dumbledore’s Deluminator seems to work in exactly the opposite way. When someone Ron loves speaks his name, it captures that moment and gives him a light that guides him back to them. It doesn't break protective enchantments (according to the books).
Voldemort turns a name into surveillance and fear. Dumbledore turns a name into connection and a way home.
