How can I write a character who’s been SA’d respectfully and accurately?
For context- I’m a screenplay writer and I have an idea for a sort of coming of age type film about a very kind, innocent 19 year old guy who goes through university and stuff, and a huge plot point is that he gets raped by a girl one night and it really affects him. SA just isn’t represented enough in media, especially when it comes to guys. Me personally- I have been sexually harassed/borderline assaulted (not sure) very recently actually which has inspired me even more to make this story, as being just simply harassed has had quite an effect on me so I genuinely can’t imagine what people who have actually been SA’d must feel. I’m so passionate about this film but I want to (and need to) make sure it’s realistic, accurate and respectful to those who have actually had such a thing happen irl. So any advice on how to write this character? Or to word it from another angle- what would also be the worst thing I absolutely shouldn’t do when portraying an SA victim?
