How do I find the right person for the job

My husband and I are putting an offer in on a home that would require a decent amount of work (small addition/ bump out, laundry room/half bath + full kitchen remodel)

I am generally pretty picky about design and would like a well designed space with accuracy to the age of house (over 100 years old) and I would like to take a more custom approach to the renovations and to avoid any builder grade/big box store fixtures.

It might be a stupid question but where do you find good interior designers/ design+ contracting firms/ architects? What type of person am I looking for? I’m not very sure about the first step of the process and am having trouble finding anything that points in a particular direction online.
You would think there is a website or directory of designers with their work or style on display but from what I have seen there is not.

Where is a good place to start?
