Should i use stretchy or non-stretchy lining for the dress?
Hi! I have a dress pattern that’s meant for non-stretch fabric (or at least i think so). I already made a prototype in non-stretch fabric, and the fit is actually good overall, so I don’t really think the dress needs stretch.
But I realised my actual fabric has a slight horizontal stretch (no vertical stretch). I was thinking of using non-stretch lining to kind of stabilise it/prevent it from stretching too much.
The only area where the fit is slightly tight is the bust. Because of that, I was wondering if I could maybe use the outer stretchy fabric as lining only around the bust pieces, and use non-stretch lining everywhere else for more structure around the waist. I don’t really want to adjust the pattern itself because I’m scared I’ll mess up the fit. Does that make sense, or is that completely wrong? Should I just go and line the whole dress with the same material as outside?
I also thought about cutting some parts on bias, but since the fabric already has horizontal stretch, I’m worried it’ll stretch weirdly.
Another question: I want the skirt to have a more trumpet/flate shape. So i tried to take in a bit above the knee, but instead it made the skirt flare collapse in folders. Is there something I could add inside the hem to help it keep the flare shape a bit better?
