The torso fits PERFECTLY, but the sleeves are too tight on the bicep, is it just a matter of unpicking the sleeve seams?

I thrifted this shirt and the torso fits exactly how I want it, but the sleeves are a little snug in the bicep (sorry for having these cannons, I guess).

I was going to basically just unpick the cuff seam of the sleeve, which I’ve done before, but what gave me pause was that the sleeves get significantly tighter when I raise my arms directly in front of me or cross my arms but not at all when I raise them directly out to the sides or reach behind me.

I can’t tell if there’s anything weird going on here Will unpicking the sleeve cuffs help in this case, or will I have the same problem and a slightly uglier sleeve?

Fabric is 100% rayon and has been washed and line dried before trying on. I have no plans to put it in the dryer.

Recreation Help - Similar Fabric?

I''m trying to recreate this look in white/ivory. It doesnt have to be exact, but they dont sell this dress anymore. I know - It will require A LOT of hand embroidery. The fabric we found is below. The problem is that the large circle thats sort of the centerpiece (seen on the chest in most photos, but the dress is reversible) isn't part of the fabric design. Has anyone seen a similar fabric? Is there another way adding a similar detail could be possible?

The fabric we like so far: https://www.etsy.com/listing/715270245/off-white-cotton-lace-fabric-with-circle?gpla=1&gao=1&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_-craft_supplies_and_tools&utm_custom1=_k_CjwKCAjwhqfPBhBWEiwAZo196uaQ3Vca89c2Wto1Ckuz9R8HqQGaY-SczdrjKmMs9b8qW09siEbUTBoCSNYQAvD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_21500569338_164907277163_707558291657_pla-295462056867_c__715270245_12768591&utm_custom2=21500569338&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21500569338&gbraid=0AAAAADtcfRKaGpnCCOwAyVj_XbfJkwbP8&gclid=CjwKCAjwhqfPBhBWEiwAZo196uaQ3Vca89c2Wto1Ckuz9R8HqQGaY-SczdrjKmMs9b8qW09siEbUTBoCSNYQAvD_BwE&variation0=2203576212

How do I make this sleeve?

Hey guys, need some pointers on hand-sewing a string of beads (seed beads threaded onto a piece of thread) to the sleeves of a blouse to create a cascading beaded cap-sleeve look. Ignore the beaded bodice in the picture, i’ll be using a plain sleeveless blouse. Just want the sleeves to look like this.

I don’t know what string to use, or how to attach the hardware to the fabric - are there specific types of knots I need to use or any types of thread to pick/avoid. Any help is much appreciated!

Here is the reference picture.

Is there a UPF 50+ material you can easily sew into your existing hats to protect your head?

There are a few if any good options for stylish baseball caps that are UPF 50 for kayak fishing.

Help - why does my skirt look like this?

The black skirt is my first attempt at a skirt. I washed it, put it in the dryer, and it just looks weird and too wrinkly. I ironed it, but it still looks off. It feels wrinkly or wavy even after I ironed it. This fabric is 100% cotton that I got at a regular fabric store, the thread is polyester. Does anyone know what I mean? It looks not like other clothes. I don't know if there are better words to describe what feels off about it.

The blue skirt is my second attempt at a skirt, and that one is much better. That one came from deconstructed pants that are 97% cotton, 3% elastane.

My goal with sewing is to be able to have cute clothes that aren't made of polyester. So far the only thing I've learned is that if I go to a regular fabric store all they have is fabric for quilts that makes a skirt look weird. What do I need to look for when buying fabric or sewing so that it doesn't look Like That? Does the second skirt only look better because its 3% elastane and it's actually impossible to have cute clothes that aren't won't give me microplastics?????? Where are people shopping for fabric? I thought the right move would be to go to an in person fabric store so I can see the colors and feel the textures, but they only had one texture - the one you use to make quilts and little placemats.

New Janome 1522 vs Used Janome HD 1000/3000 for Workwear Enthusiast?

I have been agonizing about this decision for days! For context I am a very new sewist, and this is will be my first machine. My budget is $350 at most. I mainly hope to do alterations and sew my own clothes; however I am a guy who wears a good amount of denim and canvas menswear/workwear as well as more standard materials. Would the Janome HD 1000 or 3000 be the worth the extra cost, or is the 1522 adequate for my purposes?

Finishing seams on a quilted piece

Okay so, I’m making a pair of jeans out of denim scrap, and basically quilting them together to fit the pattern, now I have a concern about the inner seams. I’ve never made an actual quilt and my question is am I going to have to finish ALL the seams?

(Sorry if this is a dumb question it’s probably obvious it just seams like a lot of overlocking)

needle sews once(????)

i bought this lucznik at the flea market barely used, and after hours of struggling with polish manuals while not knowing a bit of polish i managed to figure out how to set it all up

except ... the actual sewing doesnt work

i have no idea what im doing wrong

the needle is either a 80 or 100, i csnt remember which one i broke while setting it up, in either case the manual says both are fine

EDIT: tried sewing a non stretch fabric, same result :/

EDIT2: ill post photos of the thread path + how the setup in the manual looks in a few hours!

Trying to change my stitch width and the needle mechanism is running into something. Any ideas?

I'm trying to set my stitch width, and I can't get it to go past 3. The width selector will slide, but The needle mechanism is physically running into something inside the machine and won't slide any further. Like it just looks like there's not enough room to actually select a wider stitch? Am I overlooking something here?

Self-taught beginner looking for a structured way to self-learn garment sewing & flat pattern drafting

Hello,

I started sewing about a year ago as a self-taught beginner. So far I’ve mostly done simple things like hemming, tote bags and small pouches without zippers. Recently I realized that if I want to stay motivated, I need to start making the things that truly inspire me: clothes I actually want to wear, fitted to my body and my style.

What really interests me is not only learning sewing, but also understanding garment construction and pattern making. My goal is eventually to be able to see a garment (in a picture, in the street, or even imagine one in my head) and then recreate it by drafting the pattern myself before sewing it. That part is extremely important to me.

I’m especially drawn to lightweight, fluid fabrics like satin, silk, chiffon, viscose, etc., although I want to learn all kinds of materials over time.

At the moment, I specifically want to learn pattern drafting by hand/on paper rather than digitally. I work in tech/software, and sewing is something I want to use to disconnect from screens and computers, so using CAD software would honestly ruin part of the experience for me.

I also don’t own a dress form/mannequin, so I’m thinking flat pattern drafting might make more sense for me than draping for now.

I feel overwhelmed about where to begin. I don’t currently have the possibility to take in-person or online classes, so I would really like to learn through books and structured resources rather than jumping between tutorials from different people using completely different methods and approaches. I’m looking for something progressive and coherent that helps build solid foundations and skills step by step.

What would you recommend as the best learning path for me ?

I’d like to learn:

- sewing garments properly
- understanding fit and garment construction
- flat pattern drafting / making my own patterns
- altering clothes to fit me
- copying existing garments without taking them apart

Are there any books, methods, or step-by-step resources that helped you build strong foundations as a complete beginner?

Thank you so much!

Wavy underwear waistband

I recently washed and dried a pair of my boyfriend’s new underwear and they came out of the dryer with the waistband looking wavy at the top. He trusted me to wash them and not ruin them and now I’m hoping there is some way to fix this, any ideas?

Coverstitch Machine Recommendations for T-Shirt Hemming?

Background: I'm a fan of oversized styles, but have wider hips, so I often run into issues with t-shirts being super baggy up top but then stretched tight around my hips, which looks ridiculous. I've 'solved' this problem by cropping the t-shirts to just above my hips, fixing the issue and having the added benefit of making the proportions look a lot better and far more stylish than just a plain t-shirt. However, my current process has just been hacking at it with my regular sewing machine, using a straight stitch. This has worked fine thus far, but as I'm getting to my more expensive and/or smaller t-shirts, I'd like something that retains the stretching ability and has a more professional finish. My research has led me to believe I am in need of a coverstitch machine, but the options are a little overwhelming, especially since I'm not really a sewer as a much as a 'hacker' (modifying existing clothing, making the occasional Halloween costume where no one will look too closely at finishes, etc.) and don't really understand all of the features and terminology in the product descriptions.

Budget isn't necessarily a problem (though not quite several thousands of dollars levels), but ease of use is - I'm concerned that if I just buy the best machine I can afford, I will need to spend weeks trying to figure out how to work the thing before being able to stitch a simple t-shirt hem. On the other hand, the cheaper standard beginner models seems to have a lot of manual steps or consistency problems, which, knowing myself, will almost certainly either make me ragequit and never use the machine again, or make me too worried to use it on my nicer shirts and never use the machine again.

Any recommendations for a nice coverstitch machine that's great for hemming t-shirts and at least somewhat intuitive to set up/use, but worth the money and won't need to be replaced if I feel like becoming a 'real' sewer in the future? Bonus points if it's a brand/model often used in youtube tutorials and the like, because reading manuals is a slog.
