Trupanion is going to cost me 30-45k in premiums at this rate
Fourth year in a row of very large monthly premium increases for me.
When I signed up, I understood that Trupanion pricing increased with the dog's cohort, not based on my individual dog’s claims or aging. I enrolled my mixed-breed dog when he was under 1 year old, and I expected future increases to roughly track inflation or normal veterinary cost increases.
Instead, my actual annual compound growth rate has been over 19%. If that trend continues until my dog is 12–14 years old, my projected total lifetime premiums somewhere in the range of $30k–$45k.
That seems extremely high to me. My vet bills have gone up over the same period, but nowhere near that amount; maybe around 10% total. So I’m trying to understand what I’m missing here.
Is this level of premium growth normal for Trupanion? Are others seeing similar increases?
