SOU 100th Commencement and "Vitality Plan"

https://preview.redd.it/hh9xbfqtdm9h1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=b4a6fc3c63219d7a0d51c04d4ccdd00d22f066f8

SOU took an important step last week when it released the Vitality Plan, which will position SOU for long-term sustainability and future success. A decision by the Legislative Emergency Board to release $7.5 million means SOU will have continued cash flow and operational support while it implements the plan.

The Vitality Plan comes during a difficult period for higher education and includes challenging decisions that will impact multiple areas of the university. At the same time, it reflects a deliberate effort to strengthen SOU’s future while preserving the university’s vital role in educating students and serving Southern Oregon.

Throughout this months-long process, SOU's focus has been on reducing the impact on students wherever possible, strengthening financial sustainability, and creating a stronger foundation for the future of the university and the region SOU serves.

Please consider a special gift to the newly-established SOU Vitality Fund, to help ensure the success of the institutional transformation outlined in the SOU Vitality Plan.

A copy of the Vitality Plan is available on the SOU website: sou.edu/president/path-to-fiscal-sustainability.

The Opposite - in Seinfeld or Your Lifestyle - What Opposite to Try?

For example - I think Jerry should have done the menage. Kramer should have made $10M with Jackie by not using the balm. George should have taken the big office. 10 years ago - we should have gone all in on Nvidia stock.

YES - the Opposite!

Oregon's Emergency Board approved $7.5 million Wednesday to help keep Southern Oregon University operating - what do you think?

Emergency Board gives millions to Southern Oregon University

Southern Oregon University will receive the first half of a potential $15 million state funding package aimed at addressing its financial crisis.

Oregon's Emergency Board approved $7.5 million Wednesday to help keep Southern Oregon University operating through the next fiscal year, despite concerns from some lawmakers that the university's financial recovery plan doesn't go far enough.

The emergency funding is the first half of a possible $15 million legislative package for SOU, allocated through the state's Higher Education Coordinating Commission. The remaining $7.5 million could be released this fall.

Ashland Zoning Change to Preserve?

Ashland considers zoning changes to preserve manufactured home parks

City officials say the proposals aim to preserve one of Ashland's most affordable housing options while making it easier for residents to buy their parks.

The Ashland City Council is considering a package of changes aimed at preserving manufactured home parks and strengthening protections for residents.

Manufactured home parks provide some of Ashland's most affordable housing, but residents can be vulnerable to redevelopment or displacement when parks are sold. City officials say the proposed changes are intended to preserve those communities while giving residents more opportunities to keep their parks in local hands.

The Most Eccentric Town - or a Better Term?

One Visit To The Most Eccentric Town In Oregon And You'll Be Completely Smitten

Somewhere in Southern Oregon, there’s a town where world-class actors rehearse Shakespeare while mountain bikers plan their next trail ride, where organic farmers sell vegetables to yoga instructors, and where nobody thinks any of this is unusual.

Ashland is that town, and it’s been quietly blowing visitors’ minds for decades while maintaining a refreshingly humble attitude about the whole thing

SOU is Stable - President Rick Bailey

"SOU is stable," President Bailey states in monthly message | Local | kdrv.com

ASHLAND, Ore. - Southern Oregon University (SOU) President Rick Bailey delivered his monthly video message at Raider Stadium, focusing on the upcoming commencement ceremony and the university's future.

"It's always our best day of the year, where we celebrate our graduates with their families and the community," Bailey said. "We get to see students achieve their educational dreams."

Bailey acknowledged the timing of this year's graduation comes during uncertainty in higher education. "There are a lot of questions about the future of higher education – not just at SOU, but across the state and around the country," he said.

Despite the questions, Bailey emphasized that SOU remains stable and operational. The university will continue serving students and the southern Oregon region for years to come, he said.

The university is working to cut about a fifth of its $100 million yearly budget. Bailey said he's leading efforts to turn that difficult process into something positive.

"You are going to start to see some plans for how we are going to do that and likely become a role model – really for the rest of the state, and probably for the rest of the country – in terms of regional public universities," Bailey said. "There is a path for SOU, and one worth fighting for."

Bailey told viewers there are many ways supporters can help the university. Those include student recruitment and retention, advocacy and philanthropy.

Love for the Carson City Lifestyle!

CC friends - last year I moved here from Washington state. WA is 34/50 - high tax state - even on the working class. Plenty of better havens/states with low taxes - to reside. 8 states with no income tax - excluding WA. And FL is moving to drop their property tax. WA tax shifts to the working class - rent goes up - and property/sales/income/you name it taxes. $7k/$11k in WA property tax going to poor quality schools - endless spending.

WA wildfire smokey weather is toxic chronically in way too much of the eastern WA area every late summer - and the west side cloudy/drizzle days rule that out if you can avoid it - perverse car driving mess there/higher crime rate.

I drive-mow-edge-HVAC-scooter-eBike electric/solar power a home - awesome weather/low cost of living - Carson City, NV - and left WA given governance tax greed/low IQ performance.

80% sunny CC in the Pacific time zone - 5-hour drive to the ocean - ease of flying out of Reno - world class Lake Tahoe recreation - stunning landscapes and views - mild 4-seasons. 8m+ live in WA - just 3.4m in NV - with superior healthcare. Gaming and tourism pay a lot of the way in NV taxes. Blessed w/family-friends in CC also. 😍👍😁

SOU President Update - Fiscal Challenges 2026+

President Bailey - to his credit last year - volunteered a $53,000 cut in his salary. The president seems confident SOU will quite easily get past current fiscal challenges. I admire the president - but am a bit surprised SOU didn't do more to correct these dire straits earlier in his tenure.

I like their Vitality Plan path. I earned a summa SOU-MBA - and as a local resident - plan to keep taking courses and enjoy the beautiful campus. 1st time college students - however - may hesitate to commit to SOU given fiscal challenges. What insights do you have about how SOU's path is progressing?
