How can I improve my chances of getting into mechanical design/CAD without experience?
I’m 21 years old and have a technical degree in Electromechanics.
I don’t have a college degree yet and I also don’t have formal industry experience, but I’ve been consistently developing my technical skills on my own.
I have strong interest and experience in:
- CAD and 3D modeling;
- technical drawing;
- mechanical design;
- 3D printing;
- manufacturing processes;
- and electromechanical systems.
My goal is to build a career as a mechanical designer/CAD designer, and I’m currently trying to better understand:
- how my current skill level compares to the market;
- which skills are most valuable for getting a first opportunity;
- what companies usually expect from entry-level candidates;
- and how someone without professional experience can stand out.
I’d really appreciate honest feedback from people already working in the field:
What skills, projects, or areas of knowledge would you recommend focusing on to improve my chances of getting my first opportunity in the industry?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
