I keep seeing people post and comment that Joel should have survived and taken Morris' role. I don't think so.
As much as I would have liked to have seen Kyle Gallner have more screentime as Joel, the more I thought about it, it would not be a good thing. If Joel survived and then had failed to save Skye after already failing to save Rose who he clearly still loved, it would just be a complete disservice to his character. Also he had just completely blew up his original mission to kill the drug dealer and pass the curse to his brother, instead killing both of them and passing it to Lewis. He likely would have been too grief stricken to have helped anyone else and would have gone about his life. Also, a movie where he's being the lead would have been likely too repetitive to the 1st one and also movie wise probably wouldn't be entertaining. We already saw him doing the whole investigation part with Rose, we didn't need a repeat. Smile 2 works so well as it is because it introduces an entirely new protagonist, a protagonist not typically seen in horror movies, a popstar. I'm satisfied that it was made that way in order to raise the stakes and have the sequel be set in a world with a completely different setting and where the sequel isn't a carbon copy of the first film.
"So you wanna go and throw it away fine!" "Do it, throw it away I don't care!" "That's what everyone expects of you anyway."
Rosemarie Dewitt doesn't get enough credit for her performance especially here.
The fuck are you doing?!
Fucking tell me
