We're finishing up the cabinets for our kitchen remodel and wanted to share this little detail that we feel makes a huge difference. We elected to edge band the faces of all the cabinet boxes to match the finish on the doors. For the most part you don't really see the cabinet boxes behind the door & drawer faces, but in certain areas where there are larger gaps, like our microwave, it makes the gaps much cleaner dissapear. Not really a hard project but it can be tedious. Definitely one of those things that slow is fast. It added about 15 minutes to each cabinet assembly, but that adds up when you have over 30 boxes to build.

We are almost done with our full kitchen remodel using IKEA cabinets. We specifically designed our new layout so everything has a home so there is nothing on the countertops. We were kind of surprised that IKEA doesn't have an 'in drawer' paper towel holder available, but after looking at several options from other manufacturers I decided to make our own. Using some scrap walnut and 1" copper pipe I had in my shop I came up with this design. It replaces the factory drawer front and holds a jumbo size paper towel roll perfectly. The inset drawer is in the trash drawer directly next to our sink so it will be easy access. We did go with shorter trash bins than the standard IKEA ones so we could lower the inset drawer a little more to make room. Pretty pleased with how it turned out! And don't mind the mismatched laminate countertop. Those are only temporary as we are waiting on out Taj Mahal quartz to be installed.

Edit 4/29: WOW! We had no idea that paper towel storage could be so controversial! After reading the comments it is obvious that most of you go through A LOT more paper towels than we do. We have always used dish rags and cloths to wipe things down and have a healthy supply of clean ones on the ready. We are a busy family of four, and cook a ton, and we still only go through a roll of paper towels every two to three weeks. Because of this we feel no need to have the roll sitting on the island and having it inside a drawer directly next to the sink is more than convenient for us.

As for the garbage I should have clarified that we put all of our food scraps and waste in our MILL, which breaks down and composts everything every night. If you haven't tried one these, we highly recommend it! You can put anything in it and there are no smells and the next day it is compost! Because of this, the garbage cans are primarily full of misc. package waste and not organic material.

Happy cooking and to each their own on where you put your paper towels!!!
