Small Room + Cheap IKEA random stuff + PAX = dream walk in wardrobe, office, and 'garrage' workbench.

Just bought my first place, and the second bedroom was this little tiny room (2.8mx2.9m) that barely fit a single bed but had a unique feature as it, along with the main bedroom, both connect to the bathroom thru their own doors.

Thanks to this group, ai, and a lot of mental planning/adding things to cart in the Ikea app etc. and with no building or practical skills at all, I've successfully pulled off the dream conversion which only needs maybe a few coats of paint to finish it off.

One of my fav things is buying 3 random desktops, the main of which I was able to get 1m wide and a bit deeper than normal (I think 70 or 80) which is the same width as the wardrobe light I attached to the kallax above the monitor. Had sparky install clipsal icon zigbee switches and a Power point each above both wardrobe sections and paired with mmwave Apollo sensor as well as pir sensors for very cute automations.

Philips all in one steamer/iron is basically 75cm wide making it a perfect fit at the base of my wall of drawers.

Also I used some of the desk legs to sure up support for the half Billy bookcase, white silicone to join the gaps between the desk and shelves and wall, and last min I found some special brackets at Ikea that connects a desk to the kallax which I instead used to connect the Billy to the desktops and the desktops to each other so I could remove a leg where the chair would go.

Finished it off with a cheap ikea mirror to add a greater sense of space - and now its my fav room in the house.

I made the Varmblixt mirror lamp smart with Tradfri and it was surprisingly easy!

Hi everyone, I thought this might be worth sharing. First and foremost, shoutout to this post from which I drew my inspiration:https://www.reddit.com/r/ikeahacks/comments/1rp3vx2/varmblixt_internal_power_supply/#lightbox

My goal was to integrate the Varmblixt mirror into my Hue system and is triggered by a motion sensor. At first, I simply used a Hue smart plug. However, the mechanical "clicking" sound of the plug turning on and off was super annoying – not to mention the lack of dimmability.

After finding the post mentioned above, I remembered I had an old, grey Tradfri driver laying around (Product No. 503.561.87) that I previously used for cabinet lighting, which I knew definitely works with Hue.

Since the actual light inside the mirror is just a standard 24V DC LED with two wires, and the Tradfri driver outputs 24V DC as well, it perfectly matched. As seen in the second image, I opened the internal connection box of the mirror, released the wires from the proprietary IKEA module (there's a little spring mechanism where you need to put a very thin screwdriver or similar in the opening to release the wire. It's very finicky), and connected them to a stripped Tradfri connection cable seen in image 3 (sacrificial lamp) and 4 (I used Wago terminals which are very common and readily available, at least in Germany).

It works like a charm! Totally silent, fully integrated into Hue, and fully dimmable. It's probably obvious, but I want to emphasize that the original switch / dimmer of the mirror is no longer working (i don't have a picture of it but the original power cable is now hidden behind the mirror). It's just the Hue / Tradfri combo now.

All in all, it took about 30 minutes of effort. If anyone wants to replicate this, here's what I used:

  • TRÅDFRI Driver and the accoridng FÖRNIMMA power cable
  • A sacrificial connection cable to get the proprietary plug for the driver (I used an old Vaxmyra lamp)

While I cannot assure compatibility, I could imagine that other IKEA smart home products could work as a substitute, like the VÅGDAL cable or the cable from the MITTLED light.

Little bonus side note (though not a hack): The rest of the furniture in the picture is a NORDLI drawer for shoes, mixed with a METOD high cabinet for jackets and stuff. :')

IKEA furniture - I’m screwed, right?

Decided it was the right choice to paint some ikea cabinets as part of a wet bar. Did all of the research I could, sanded down all parts of the cabinet, primed with Bin Primer with two coats, however at the end of each coat I committed what I now believe was mistake one:

\- I used 220 sandpaper on an orbital sander as oppose to lightly by hand.

I then sprayed them each with three coats of the same paint I had bought for the room, thinking my previous steps were good, committing what I now believe is my second error:

\- I used Sherman Williams Interior Acrylic Latex (SuperPaint)

Six weeks later, the paint still feels ever so slightly tacky, and anytime a bottle of similar is place on a shelf for a short time it sticks a little. The paint is still fairly easy to scratch off, and when it does, is still a little rubbery.

I am indeed, screwed yes? And will have no choice but to completely remove, disassemble, scrap, sand and repaint again, right?

Or is there something else I can do to save this disaster?

Varmblixt Stand

Made out of 2 Ikea Svasp book ends and those rubber thingies for curtain rods to make sure they don’t roll off LOL

IKEA SÄLJAN 186 cm desk setup, long term sagging/wobble experiences?

Im thinking of getting a desk setup using the 186 cm IKEA SÄLJAN countertop as a desktop. The room width is about 195 cm, so the size seems almost perfect for that space.

The setup will mainly be used for a PC setup, monitor arm on the right side (1 monitor) as a regular office/gaming use

Im currently considering using two IKEA SKÅLSTA frame legs/supports instead of traditional individual desk legs.

Before buying, Ill love to hear some real-world long term experiences from people who have used the SÄLJAN as a desk.

Mainly things I’m wondering about:

  • Has your SÄLJAN sagged/bowed over time?
  • Any wobble issues?
  • Did you add any reinforcement underneath?
  • What legs/frame setup worked best for you?
  • Has anyone used SKÅLSTA with it specifically?
  • How well does it handle monitor arms?

Also, i would love pictures 😛

How to narrow a Leksvik bookshelf

Hello! I would like to cut down the width of this Leksvik bookshelf to fit a specific space. We can easily cut the shelves with tools on hand, but what drill bit/tool can I get to produce the holes to fit the cams? Thanks!

How to mount an IKEA magnetic knife holder to a marble wall WITHOUT drilling? (Double-sided tape failed)

I need to mount this IKEA magnetic knife rack onto a marble wall. Drilling is not an option. As you can see in the photos, the back of the holder is recessed. I tried using double-sided tape, but the gap is too wide. Layering the tape just caused it to peel off under the weight. Since I'll be attaching it directly to marble, what are my best options to fill that gap and get a strong, secure hold without drilling?

It's finally my turn to post Billy built-ins

Where it started to how it ended.

This project took me weeks and cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $2000 between the cost of five units, six toppers, and the billions of feet of trim it took to blend the shelves in with the painfully intricate crown moulding. Also had to buy BIN primer, a nail gun and paint sprayer to use with out compressor, more moulding because it turned out we'd accidentally bought a few pieces with the wrong profile....

I custom cut the dentil moulding. I coped eight fancy inside corners at the walls and hand mitered four fancy outside corners at the outside corner. I shimmed and braced and shimmed some more. I screwed each unit into the wall in three places. I painted and painted and painted and painted.

Finally, it is done.

My partner (whose idea this mostly was lol) wants to put a fancy sliding ladder on it but 1. he didn't figure out how he wanted to structure that beforehand so who the hell knows if it can even be done safely and 2. we do not have the space for it.

I don't have a good shot with the projector screen down at the moment, but rest assured that it's plenty stable and a great alternative to the Big Ugly Wall of Screen.

I am so happy. Tonight we drink bubbly wine.

In more practical terms, we started with one extant Billy unit, built an 11"x8"x16' box, painted the unit we already had, added five of its bretheren for a total of six. I decided to leave rhe back panels off to save on painting and compensated by adding extra earthquake brackets halfway up, on the opposite side from the ones up top. Added the toppers, then built yet another box to go up top and support the crown moulding. I panelled over the feet of the units by actually cutting the backing boards into strips with the rable saw and tacking them down. It's a little flimsy, but it made for a decently continuous surface above the baseboard. An interesting challenge we faced is that the moulding seems to be original to the the house (1920s) and consequently everything is slightly the wrong size, even though we were able to find the right profiles. Also, don't get me started on dentils and dado blades. I may never stop having nightmares. We preserved all the original moulding, it's just hiding behind the units, so if future owners want to revert they absolutely can. I, however, will never take this shit down knowing how much work it took to put it all up.

What is this called I wish I could find more

Hey folks- I have so many of these shelves but only two pair of the brackets on the end. Does anyone know what they are called so I can look into sourcing more? They are quite a bit old but do exactly what I want them to and I plan on re-covering the shelves with vinyl paper to give them a new make over. Any advice or recommendations for resources would be appreciated!

Can you attach a LAGKAPTEN to a KALLAX lengthwise?

Just wondering if you can use the a LAGKAPTEN like t4his, with the INLAGG hardware connection (I assume I'd need two?) with a KALLAX on the back and two adjustable legs in the front

2 IKEA rugs = one pouf

Made this floor pouf using 2 IKEA SORTSÖ rugs. If you don’t count the filling, the whole thing came together for about €10.

I stacked the rugs in a cross shape, lined them up evenly, then hand-sewed the edges. The filling is just leftover beads from two old bean bags I had at home, but fabric scraps work too and if you add a zipper, you could even use it as storage for blankets or other soft stuff.

This is actually my second one, the first has been holding up for years.

I sewed the whole thing by hand with a basic sack needle and regular thread (just threaded multiple strands through the needle for extra strength). Took about one full viewing of Mission Impossible 2, so… roughly one Ethan Hunt 😅

The process:

  1. Lay one rug vertically
  2. Lay the second rug horizontally on top to form a cross
  3. Fold and bring up the sides
  4. Sew the edges together by hand, leaving one side open
  5. Fill with bean bag beads, fabric scraps, or soft storage items
  6. Close the final seam or sew in a zipper instead, so you can remove the cover, wash it, or use it for storage

Update - Kallax hack to add undermount pullout shelf

I posted the other day: https://www.reddit.com/r/ikeahacks/s/EuqdnjYCse

I ordered the shelf that someone suggested. I am not concerned about how it may look, I just wanted to be able to play my records!

It does what I wanted. 🎉 All I need to do now is add some foam to the top edges of the shelving so the player doesn’t slide too much when I pull the shelf out or push it back in.

How to invert the NORDKISA Small Open wardrobe?

Hey everyone,

I’m trying to do a little IKEA hack on the small NORDKISA wardrobe with sliding door, and I was wondering if anyone managed to invert the rod/rail from the left side to the right side?

I need the rod on the right instead of the left, but I can’t figure out if it’s actually possible.

Has anyone done this before or found a workaround?

Any advice or photos would be super appreciated, thanks! 🙏

NEED Help!

As the title says - I need help! I stumbled across this sub a few months ago and have been quietly lurking ever since. We have a vaulted ceiling in our LR and my wife and I are looking to create something on our TV wall that’s functional and aesthetically pleasing. We want to get rid of the boring entertainment center that we have at the moment and create some sort of built-in surround that can be a focal piece.

I’ve seen a lot of really amazing ideas on here, so I’m trying to get the help of all the people that are way more creative than I am. We obviously want storage, shelves or cabinets, a place we can store shoes and what not. The hardest part is what to do as you get closer to the vault angle. We’re not going to put storage all the way up to the ceiling because it’s not functional - but I’m also open to ideas.

I see a lot of people on here repurposing the Billy bookshelf, but wasn’t sure that would fit my needs because it’s too wide. Any ideas would be amazing!

Picked up a few IKEA MOSSLANDA Picture Ledge shelves and turned them into a curtain facade / faux valance situation and honestly… it came out way better than expected.

Install was very easy. Took me maybe an hour total.

Right now they’re just mounted side by side, but I’m probably going to go back, fill the seams with some putty, sand it down, and paint everything so it looks like one solid built-in piece.

The best part though I had this random outdoor LED strip laying around that was way too long but I threw it on for some ambient lighting.

And yeah… that’s what really made it.
Gives it that soft glow at night and makes the whole thing feel way more high-end than it should.

All in, this cost me under $100.
I was originally looking at custom options getting quoted $500+ for basically the same look… so this felt like a no-brainer.

Super clean, minimal, hides the curtain hardware, and now doubles as ambient lighting.

Low effort, high payoff.

If anyone’s thinking about doing something similar, go for it! You won’t regret it.

Can anyone point me to storage bench hacks that will actually support adults?

We can’t anchor into the wood paneling in our apartment, so I’m trying to work with this window corner and turn it into toy storage, play surface/bench seating, but I’d like for it to actually be strong to support adults and long-term seating. Since we’re renting, it can’t be permanent and it needs to allow for the vent and outlet access.

Can anyone suggest the best cabinets for hacking and how to make them support real weight? Thank you!

Turned my Kallax into a vinyl record player, but I feel like I could level it up a bit, just don't know how. Any ideas?

Ikea PAX sliding door modification

Hello, I'm new to modifying IKEA so I was wondering if the PAX sliding doors could be modified to fit a 100cm frame. My main concern would be the soft close mechanism as it looks similar to the SKYTTA one, and that has a spring or something inside. Any wisdom appreciated. Thank you.
