Drive Mode Advice

I'm shopping for a car and the VW Taos is at the top of my list. I just test drove a 2023 Taos, and I was a bit put off by the transmission handling. I've certainly heard about such concerns, so I wasn't entirely surprised, but it was still a bit concerning, and so I wanted to get some advice.

It was quite jerky, both accelerating and decelerating. This was on suburban streets so I also felt we were often at a speed where it was switching gears a lot. We were never on a highway. I'm not at all certain about what mode I was in. I toggled what I thought was going from Drive to Sport and back with the gear shift, but I'm definitely not confident I was doing anything correctly. At one point I thought I had put it into the regular drive mode, but a few minutes later I noticed the S on the dashboard. I didn't fiddle with the mode knob at all. This was at CarMax, so the dealer was basically in the dark as much as I was.

So I would love any and all advice.

I do plan to try test driving one (or more) again. Is there anything in particular I should try doing? I'll probably also try to go to an actual VW dealer for at least one test drive.

Thanks in advance!
