IKEA MALM hack: built-in 200W USB-C charging station with a custom 3D-printed bezel
My boyfriend modified the IKEA MALM chest of drawers and turned it into a bedside charging station.
He cut an opening into the top of the MALM and designed and 3D-printed a custom bezel/mounting frame for the charging unit, so the charger sits neatly and flush with the surface.
The charger is an Anker Prime 200W USB-C charging station with six ports. It has four USB-C ports and two USB-A ports, so we can charge several devices without having chargers and cables spread all over the bedside table.
He also routed the cable through the furniture to keep the setup as tidy as possible.
The main modification was:
- Cutting an opening into the top of the MALM
- Designing and 3D-printing a custom insert/bezel for the charger
- Installing the charging station into the new opening
- Routing the cable through the furniture.
I’m impressed with how clean it turned out!
Has anyone else added built-in charging or other tech to their IKEA furniture?
