I want to share my experience in case it helps someone avoid the same situation. I’ve been importing for a few years, but I was relatively new to using Alibaba for LCL shipments. Before placing a larger order, I decided to test with a small batch of glass vases.

During the process, I was encouraged to use a logistics company connected to the supplier. Since I had a good experience with another supplier before, I didn’t question it as much as I should have. Things started to go wrong pretty quickly. The total cost ended up being much higher than expected due to unclear and constantly increasing logistics charges. In the end, I paid roughly 3x what I would normally expect for an LCL shipment.

On top of that, the packaging wasn’t what we had agreed on, which created a risk of damage. Some of the items also didn’t match what was promised, and this was only mentioned after the shipment had already been sent. When the goods reached the destination, I was asked to pay additional charges in a way that was very unclear and difficult to verify. Altogether, this situation cost me around $1000. I did open a dispute through Alibaba. I received a partial refund, but only for the packaging issues. The logistics-related problems were not really resolved.

To be fair, I also made mistakes. I trusted the supplier’s logistics recommendation too easily, didn’t insist on a fully transparent cost breakdown, and assumed the process would be similar to my previous experience.

I’m not making direct accusations, but the whole experience felt very non-transparent and hard to manage as a buyer. If you’re new to Alibaba, just be careful. Try to avoid supplier-linked logistics unless you’ve verified them independently, and make sure you fully understand all costs before paying anything.

If something feels unclear, it probably is and it’s better to stop and clarify early.

Luckily this wasn’t a large order, but it could have been much worse.
