I may have gotten some bad advice: waxed wet leather

Hi all! I was trying to clean and recondition my sad, cracked, leather belt (found at goodwill and used several years), and my buddy, who seemed to know what he was doing, helped me soak it in warm soapy water for 10 minutes, dried it for an hour, and gave me a stiff brush to apply the wax I had (dr. Martens), which I probably applied overzealously, and then attempted to buff out hours later.

  1. I'm concerned that I just applied waterproofing on something that's clearly still wet (it was originally a medium coppery color).

  2. It's still cracked AF and I was hoping I could get that shiny cracked finish off (he said I could fill the cracks with PVA but now I don't trust him)

  3. If anybody recognizes this type of belt and knows how I can acquire a new one if this thing's had its time.
