Walk me through this broken shaft

I get shafts just break sometimes. My question is if a shaft would break like this overnight in a bag. Long-story-short, my son pulls out his driver of the bag as his group starts to pack the van for a school golf event (last used the day before). Finds he is holding half the club with the shaft snapped nearly at the mid point. Gets really pissed and I mean really pissed so much that I hear from the coach (based on that reaction I can’t imagine he is not telling me the truth on how he discovered the club). What I’m hearing from people I show the picture to is that a club only breaks like that when it is swung, not in a bag even if crushed. I’m not out to start accusing kids and will let this lie, but before I do, I’m curious if folks think this could a storage issue or if there were shenanigans at play.

Edit #1: Appreciate the thoughts. Don’t get me wrong, I do place a certain % that this could have been a deliberate snap by him or someone else. I guess I was wondering what else could have happened were someone to find a club like this based on the evidence at hand.
