Best hotel Istanbul

Hey guys,
We arrived in Istanbul two days ago and are currently staying at Niles Hotel Istanbul. We’ve had a great time exploring the old city, walking around and seeing a lot of the historical side.
For our final 3 nights, I feel like changing the scenery completely.
I’d love to stay somewhere more modern and lively, where you step outside in the evening and there are restaurants, terraces, bars, music and plenty of people around. Somewhere with a bit of energy rather than another quiet tourist area.
I’m here with my girlfriend and my 15-year-old nephew. We spend the days together, but in the evening I also enjoy heading out alone for a drink, talking to locals and seeing a different side of the city.
I’ve come across Beşiktaş, Nişantaşı, Karaköy, Cihangir and Kadıköy. Budget is roughly €80–150 a night.
For those who actually live here: which of those areas has the atmosphere I’m describing?
Curious to hear your experiences!

Beyazıt now, considering Beşiktaş/Nişantaşı next – boat day + nightlife questions

Hi guys,
We arrived yesterday and are staying at **Niles Hotel in Beyazıt**, near the Grand Bazaar, until Friday. I’m travelling with my girlfriend and my 15-year-old nephew; my girlfriend and I are in our 30s.
I’ve checked the wiki and searched around a bit, but I still have a few **specific questions about our plans** where local experience would really help.
**1. Beyazıt / Old City – today and Monday**
We’re deliberately spending our first two days here for the historical side of Istanbul.
We don’t want to spend two full days running between attractions though.
Our current shortlist is:
**Hagia Sophia → Blue Mosque → Basilica Cistern → Grand Bazaar / surrounding streets**
Would you change anything if we only want to spend about half the day sightseeing and the rest eating/shopping?
My nephew mainly wants affordable clothes and T-shirts. We don’t mind markets or bargaining at all.
**2. A real swimming/boat day**
This is the one thing I’ve struggled to figure out.
Years ago in Bodrum I did a full-day boat trip: music, drinks, several stops, swimming and jumping straight from the boat into the sea.
I’m aware Istanbul isn’t Bodrum.
But I’ve been looking at **Princes’ Islands / Burgazada / Heybeliada** as possibly the closest alternative.
Has anyone actually done a full-day boat trip around there **where swimming is the main activity rather than sightseeing**?
Shared or private is fine. I’m mainly trying to establish whether this is genuinely worth doing from Istanbul or whether I should forget the idea.
**3. Moving from Beyazıt Tuesday/Wednesday**
Even though our hotel is already paid until Friday, I’m considering booking another hotel for our final 2–3 nights.
I want the complete opposite of Beyazıt:
**modern/upscale + good restaurants + shopping during the day + lively evenings within walking distance.**
My shortlist after searching is:
**Beşiktaş / Nişantaşı / Karaköy / Bebek**
I’m currently leaning toward **Nişantaşı or Beşiktaş**.
For our particular situation — couple in our 30s + 15-year-old during the day, but I may go out alone later at night — which of those two makes more sense?
Hotel budget would be roughly **€150–250 per night** if that matters.
**4. One evening out alone**
This part is just for me.
I’m in my 30s, not looking to get completely drunk and I don’t necessarily want to walk straight into a nightclub at midnight.
I’d rather start around **21:00–22:00** somewhere with good music, cocktails/drinks and a social crowd, then possibly go somewhere else later.
I’ve also read several times that some Istanbul clubs don’t admit solo men.
Would **Beşiktaş → Ortaköy** or **Karaköy → Taksim** make more sense for that kind of night?
I’m specifically interested in an area where I can start at a good bar alone without looking completely out of place.
So that’s basically our plan:
**Sun/Mon: Beyazıt + historical Istanbul**
**Tue: proper swimming/boat day if possible**
**Wed–Fri: move to modern Istanbul**
**One evening: I head out alone**
Hopefully that’s specific enough — I’m not looking for a generic “top 10 things to do in Istanbul” list. I’m mainly trying to make the right choices between the options above.
Thanks!

URGENT: Flying to Turkey tomorrow – Dutch passport has only 4 months validity. Any recent experiences?

We booked a very last-minute trip yesterday from Frankfurt to Istanbul with Pegasus Airlines, flying tomorrow at 3 PM.
We are travelling with my 15-year-old nephew, who is a Dutch citizen. Unfortunately, we only discovered during online check-in that his passport expires on 14 December 2026. We arrive in Turkey on 15 August 2026 and are staying for only 7 days.
Pegasus’ online document check rejected his passport because it says the document should be valid until at least 12 January 2027 (150-day rule).
His Dutch ID card would solve the problem, but unfortunately we cannot find it.
I’ve contacted several authorities, but I’m getting conflicting information. The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs also mentions exemptions to the passport-validity provision for citizens of countries allowed to enter Turkey using their national ID card, and the Netherlands is listed.
Has anyone — especially a Dutch citizen — recently travelled to Turkey with a valid passport that had less than 150 days / around 4 months validity remaining?
Were you allowed to board? Did the airline check the 150-day rule? And most importantly, did Turkish immigration allow you to enter?
We know this was our mistake with such a last-minute booking. I’m just looking for real recent experiences before we decide what to do tomorrow.
Thanks so much!

Edit ———-!!

UPDATE – We made it into Türkiye 🇹🇷
First of all, thank you to everyone who commented yesterday. I honestly didn’t expect this many responses, and a lot of them were genuinely helpful. Definitely a lesson learned for us for future trips.
For anyone wondering how it ended:
This morning we planned to go to Frankfurt Airport early to explain the situation, but unfortunately we didn’t get there until around 12 PM, with our flight leaving at 3 PM. So at that point we just went straight to the check-in desk and tried our luck.
The lady at the desk was actually very helpful. She made several phone calls and eventually told us that he would be allowed to board, but that we should expect to pay a penalty of around €220 upon arrival in Türkiye.
We agreed and boarded the flight.
After landing in Istanbul, we went to passport control. They noticed the passport issue and took us aside. We calmly explained the whole situation and also told them what we had been told at check-in in Frankfurt.
In the end, we had to pay a penalty of around €180 (roughly 10,000 TL). After that, they allowed my nephew to enter Türkiye and leave again after our holiday.
They were very clear about one thing though: this was a one-time exception. If he tries to enter Türkiye again without renewing his passport, he will not be allowed in.
So… we made it. 😅🇹🇷
Obviously I’m not recommending anyone to rely on this or assume the same exception will be made for them. Get your documents sorted beforehand. But I wanted to post the outcome because yesterday I was desperately searching for experiences from people who had actually been in this exact situation.
Hopefully this update helps someone in the future who finds themselves in the same mess with no other option left.
Thanks again to everyone who took the time to comment and help us out. Really appreciated! 🙏
