Terminally ill brother. Will he outlive his teeth?
I’m looking for feedback from dental professionals on the severity of my brother’s dental situation and whether pursuing care realistically makes sense for him.
He is terminally ill and realistically is likely to pass within the next year. He has severe oropharyngeal dysphagia, chronic respiratory failure, cervical dystonia/contractures, and major positioning limitations. Aspiration pneumonia is a very real risk for him, and he cannot safely undergo sedation.
Because of his condition, he also experiences frequent vomiting, which I know likely impacts his teeth as well.
I’ve included a few pictures. What we’re really trying to understand is: will he outlive his teeth, or will his teeth outlive him?
Based on what you’re seeing, are we likely to run into major complications within the next 12 months if treatment is minimal or not possible? Things like severe pain, infection, teeth breaking, abscesses, etc.
He’s been through a lot, and we’re just trying to make the best decisions we can for his comfort and quality of life.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and for any honest guidance you can offer.
