Have I ruined the trust in this new relationship, even though i’m telling the truth?
For context me and this guy (both 23) have been seeing each other for a little over 5 months. We recently chose to make things exclusive. On our way to dinner the other night we are both looking at my phone when a message from instagram pops up on my screen. It is from a friend of his and he asks why he is messaging me. Again, for context, his friend requested to follow me and I saw we gas mutual including the guy I am dating, so i accepted and followed back. He then proceeds to reply to my stories and message me, so I reply. We have short, mundane conversations of which I do not really remember.
I realised this isn’t appropriate so I remove him as a follower and unfollow him, during which the chat on instagram deletes (from my memory I do not remember this being a thing). I do this as we are leaving the train and heading to dinner, and tell him so. He is quiet all night, and we do not speak when we get home so naturally I question if he is ok. He says yes we go on and sleep and I head to work the next day. I ask if he wants to discuss the situation as he is very off with me and I explain everything as I have here. He questions how long we spoke for and what we spoke about. I told him that he did ask me to visit his work once (he works in a bar around the corner from my work) and to which I said no and didn’t reply as regularly, but he kept replying to my stories. He does not believe me when I say there was nothing weird going on between us over those texts and that I was just being friendly. I understand now that it is not appropriate and have obviously apologised. He does find it weird that the chat deleted, which I am also confused with. He said he wouldn’t have wanted to see the messages even if they were there though so i’m not sure what that changes. Anyway he has asked for time to think about this as he doesn’t know where his head is at. I am feeling extremely upset and just looking for some advice as I really thought we had something good.
