SSB screening tips

I have given 4 SSB attempts (3 C/O & 1 Rec) and never got S/O, so I want to share some screening tips that may help you in your SSB.
First of all, screening is not just about luck. It depends on how you perform on that particular day. Your past SSB result does not decide your screening result; I have seen PR candidates getting S/O. So, focus on your performance at that moment.
Screening Tests
Screening consists of two tests: OIR and PP&DT. Assessors never disclose their exact weightage, but we can consider it roughly 50-50.
OIR
OIR stands for Officers Intelligence Rating. You will have two reasoning tests, both strictly time-bound.
It is more of a psychological test because if you keep worrying about time, you may get stuck on one question and lose valuable time. Prepare well beforehand. Numerous OIR sets are available online, and some questions may even appear exactly during the test. Books like DDE OIR can also help.
There is no negative marking, so attempt every question. If you are stuck, leave it and return to it later.
If your OIR does not go well, don’t let it affect your PP&DT. I have seen candidates getting screened in despite having poor OIR performance.
PP&DT
PP&DT stands for Picture Perception and Discussion Test. You are shown a picture for 1 minute, given 30 seconds to mark the characters, and then 4 minutes to write your story.
Sometimes the picture is hazy. In that case, your perception can be different, so don’t panic.
When the picture appears, scan it top to bottom and left to right. First count the characters and then identify their actions.
Write a story related to what is actually visible. Avoid unnecessary negative elements such as death, theft, heinous crimes or failure unless clearly shown. Give your protagonist a proper introduction, such as name, age, designation, institute and place.
Your actions should be connected to the picture and the conclusion should be positive. Don’t make yourself the only hero; the task should be achieved through appropriate actions.
If you cannot complete the story, don’t worry. You can add 1-2 lines during narration. If your picture or perception is different from others, that’s completely fine—it is a perception test.
Narration
In my opinion, narration is one of the most important parts of PP&DT. Practice narrating your story in front of a mirror or friends.
When sitting in the semi-circle, don’t keep revising your story; you may make things worse. When you first speak, your introduction should be clear. Your first “Good Morning” should be loud and confident.
Sit relaxed and don’t speak too fast, as it can show anxiety. During important actions, keep your voice high initially and then reduce it slightly for voice modulation.
Don’t continuously look at the assessors. Look at your counterparts and naturally move your head from left to right and vice versa.
The 1-minute limit is mainly a psychological barrier. If you are speaking well, you may get enough time to complete your narration.
Discussion
When the last person finishes narrating, discussion begins automatically. There will usually be a huge fish market, so remain calm and never shout.
There will be short pauses when everyone stops speaking. Use these gaps to enter the discussion.
Initially, the discussion may revolve around the number of characters. This is your opportunity to act as a mediator. For example:
“Okay gentlemen, we are running out of time. The number of characters is decided as 3. Let’s move on to decide the theme.”
Once the theme is commonly accepted, again move the group towards the actions:
“The theme is decided. Let’s talk about the action.”
Similarly, contribute 2-3 good actions and appreciate someone if they give a useful point.
If you have participated well, the group may nominate you to give the common story. Be prepared for that. Don’t nominate yourself unless your narration was extremely poor.
While giving the common story, say “WE” instead of “I”, because it is the group’s story. Don’t narrate your individual story.
If the group cannot reach a common story, don’t forcefully complete it. Simply say:
“We have discussed up to this point.”
These are my personal observations and opinions regarding the screening test. I hope they help you in your SSB.

SCREENING TIPS

Hii, I have given 4 ssb attempts ( 3 C/O & 1 Rec) and never got S/O so I want to share some screening tips that you may use in your ssb.
First of all screening is not just about luck, it is about how you perform, your past ssb result doesn’t decide your screening result (have seen PR getting S/O). So it’s all about how you performed at that moment. Read it carefully, minor details are there.

Screening consists of two test- OIR and PP&DT. Accessors never tell the weightage of both but let’s consider it here 50-50.

OIR- standards for officers intelligence rating in which you will be having two reasoning test bound with time. It is more of a psychological test as if you keep time in mind, you can’t perform better as you will be stuck on only 1 question and time will past. Prepare well for OIR, there are numerous sets available over internet that comes as it is during OIR (if you are lucky) if not prepare well beforehand, there are numerous books like DDE OIR to prepare for OIR, try to complete all as there is no negative marking, if you are stucking at one question, leave it and attempt at the last. Although it is not allowed to write something on question paper but some candidates do tick right questions on Question sheet (even assessors will say they are wrongly marked) if you are lucky, you will get those sheets and check initial 10-15 questions, time is less, go with your luck. If you didn’t perform well during OIR, don’t worry, don’t let it affect your next test( i have seen candidates getting screened in with worst OIR scores).

PP&DT- stands for Picture perception and discussion test in which you will be shown a picture for 1 minute, 30 sec to mark the characters and 4 min for writing the story. Sometimes a hazy picture is shown ( in that case you are lucky as you can write a story prepared beforehand). When picture is shown scan the picture from top to bottom, left to right. Your first impression should be counting the no of characters and then finding what they are doing (action) , try to write a story related to picture as it is more of a perception test rather psychological. Give a good introduction to the story like Name, age, designation, institute , place ( for eg- Amit, 25 working as assistant professor at LPU, jalandhar ) your actions should be related to picture, don’t write negative until is it clearly shown ( like death, theft, heinous crimes, failure etc) and conclusion should be positive ( don’t award yourself only, task should be achieved) In case you can’t complete your story, don’t worry you can add 1-2 lines during narration. In case you find your picture is different from others, don’t worry, remember it is a perception test, your perception can be different from others.
After story writing if you are lucky, you will get some time to revise your picture, in that time frame , don’t talk to others, remember imp starting lines of action ( don’t try to mug up complete story)

Narration- In my opinion narration is the most important part of PPDT , before your ssb practice narration in front of mirror/friends. Listen to others story, when you are sitting in semi- circle, at that time don’t revise your story ( you can make things worse) . The first time you open your mouth, your introduction should be clear, the first GOOD Morning have to be loud and confident, sit relaxed and don’t speak too fast( shows anxiety) the 1 min time is just a psychological barrier, think you are free to speak, if you are speaking good, assessors will give you ample time. During starting of every action keep your voice high, then slightly reduce it( voice modulation) don’t look at the assessors during narration, look at your counterparts( don’t look at only 1 person rotated your head left to right and vice varsa) when you are narrating your story, assessors will be holding your story sheets, never completely change your story, you are permissible to change 1-2 lines and order.

Discussion- when the last person stops narrating , your discussion will begin automatically, there will be huge fish market, you have to remain calm( never shout) and there will be gaps( a pause when everyone stops speaking for 1-2 second) grab it and start speaking) in initial your discussion will stuck on no of characters, this is golden opportunity for you to become a mediator . Just say ‘OKAY GENTLEMEN WE ARE RUNNING OUT OF TIME, THE NO OF CHARACTERS ARE DECIDED AS 3 , LETS MOVE ON TO DECIDE THEME’. Then there will be fish market again over theme, do the same thing again, pick up the common theme and say ‘THEME IS DECIDED, LETS TALK ABOUT ACTION ’ . Then there will be again a fish market over actions, speak 2-3 times good actions, appreciate someone of someone giving good action.
If you have spoken well during GD there may be chances you will be nominated by group to give common story, be prepared for that( never nominate yourself until and unless you are given worst narration)
While giving concluded story, never say I say WE( as it is group story), don’t narrate your story, if your group was not able to give a common story then don’t forcefully complete the story ( JUST SAY WE HAVE DISCUSSED AT THAT POINT)
This is my opinion regarding Screening test, hope this will be useful, suggestions are allowed.
