Separate NAS and Compute or Combined
Me and my buddy are setting up a server rack at his house. We have some enterprise grade servers and are trying to figure out how we want to have them set up. My buddy says he wants to use Unraid for the main server and possibly make that the only server combining the NAS into it. I’m recommending we have the main compute server running Unraid and then another one of the servers run TrueNAS for storage since we have multiple servers already. Wanted to get some opinions on it since we’re at a crossroads.
We plan to mainly use AMP for game hosting and Plex for streaming. We will probably add more but that is what we want to have running at the moment.
Here is our current hardware that we have:
1x Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine Special Edition Cloud Gateway
1x Poweredge R730XD
3x Poweredge R720XD (One of which has 22 working 1.2tb 600mb read/write hard drives)
1x 24U server rack
