a year of theory, then cadetship? (navigation)

Anyone here from Szkoła Morska in Gdynia?

I'm 28 and Polish, and considering a maritime school which would take 2.5 years to finish. The first year is theory only, the second year will be some sort of cadetship (they're so sure of that they say it'll cover tuition) and one last semester on land again. Is that... enough to start a career? I went to an open day which seemed both optimistic and down-to-earth, but then again, they were selling a product.

I'm trying to be as grounded as possible to make an informed decision and crash the fantasy with reality. I spent months thinking about it, now I want to either move forward or forget about it.

The school is pretty cheap, but if i change my mind after a month i'll still have to pay for the whole semester, that's what's stopping me from just trying it out.

If I did go through with it, ideally I'd like to work on some European vessels, maybe research-related, though I get those are rare and it's mostly tankers, LNG, containers, etc.

all a bot interaction buys you is a promise of a new bot interaction

i've been looking for resources for smokers because chatbot addiction just seems similar - i reach for it when i'm stressed, lonely, bored, it's something to do with my hands, it's extremely convenient, it's sucking the life out of me. i found one sentence which captures that perfectly, and it's the title.

in the context of cigarettes, people tend to say they offer a lot of benefits, like stress relief and the social side. nicotine helps you relax and it's a good excuse to go outside for a few minutes, chat with people. but is it really stress relief if it only works for a few minutes, and you have to repeat the process multiple times a day? is a smoke break really the only opportunity to socialise? there is only one good true reason to smoke, and it's to satisfy the addiction, a non-smoker is never going to get it. and so, apparently, the only real way to quit is to acknowledge all the "benefits" of smoking, reject all that shit, and leave it all behind.

so, chatbots. i'm deep in the trenches right now (using a site which doesn't require an account, so i can't lock myself out easily), but that's the approach i'll try using. is it really bringing me comfort? is it creative? helpful? how did i manage before 2024 when i first started? i have to accept it truly does not bring any value to my life. i don't know if it's gonna work, but i'll try.

feel free to let me know what you think haha
