OpenXHD (open-source digital HDMI mod) - New photos!

The folks behind the upcoming OpenXHD project, a digital open-source HDMI mod for the Original Xbox, shared new photos on Bluesky recently that I thought you all might like.

OpenXHD taps into the Xbox encoder's pixel bus before it is converted to analog signals, meaning the video and audio sent over HDMI is a pure-digital (lossless) signal. It supports all Xbox motherboard revisions, and has custom firmware to handle the Xbox's plethora of video modes.

It has a 3.5mm TRRS port (in addition to HDMI) that can be wired up in a variety of ways. You could connect the normal analog video signals to the port, allowing you to output HDMI and simultaneously connect either composite video + audio or component video, for example. This is great for streamers who might want to play on a CRT and also capture HDMI. An LED is located at the end of the 3.5mm port, allowing mini-TOSLINK audio cables to be connected instead for external audio receivers (up to 5.1 surround sound digital audio).

They also shared a preview of a cutout template for people who want to keep their existing AV port. The idea being that an OpenXHD can be optionally installed in addition to the stock AV port. The template makes cutting the case much easier/cleaner for people who want both. Of course, you can also remove the stock AV port and replace it with an OpenXHD.

The device will be open-source, meaning people can build their own and also contribute back to the project with tweaks and improvements.

There's no eta as of now, but it's very encouraging to see the project coming along.
