Credit Cards - years ago, fees to merchants?

My late father in law once told me that when he was younger, HIS father had a TV repair shop, and credit cards companies would pay his father (the merchant) a fee per transaction as an incentive to accept credit from his costumers. I wish I could ask my father in law today if I have that story straight.

Does anyone have knowledge on this topic either way?

I'm teaching school, and I want to make sure I have the story straight before I share with the the students.
