Can someone explain the grammar/ structure of sentences with "gern"? If I like to pontificate (for example!) do I use the infinitive of pontificate? And the first person of the verb gern?? (Next step, how to say "you like" etc... )

English is my first language, and I can do this in French (which I know much better).
