I've made a card on which I've indexed all of my traditional gouache colors! I tried my best to sequence them by hue but if I could do it again I might move some pigments around. I love how light washes and opaque washes can present an almost completely different color depending on the pigment. Also, apart from this card helping me choose my palettes, seeing it makes me feel rich in paints.
I’m beginning to explore this primer (Daniel Smith Watercolor Ground) and, while I patiently wait for my first coats to cure, I’m curious if anyone here has spent much time with it; if so, what are your thoughts on it?
I haven’t found much first-hand information online with it and Gouache specifically.
I’m interested in it because I’m looking for a better primer than gesso—most of my paintings on gesso just slide around in the first layers and subsequent layers can be unpredictable in spots too as a result—understandable given the gesso I’m using is acrylic and my gouache is not.
This Watercolor Ground seems promising—offering more tooth and more absorption but can it be overworked like paper? Will too much painting and repainting ruin the surface? How rewet-able is it? I am so curious but I must continue to wait until my test boards are dry—almost half of the reviews on this stuff I found ignored the instructions on the bottle and (surprise surprise) had bad results lol.
Hi all of you wonderful, talented people! I’m looking for good tips for sealing/varnishing gouache. My high school art teacher taught me that hairspray can make a great, cheap fixative but I am curious if there’s a good way to protect a painting while retaining the beautiful matte quality of the paint itself? What do you use (if anything)?

Planted 3 Globe Mallows in Autumn and I’m very happy to see that they’ve taken—2 growing vigorously (one got stalled by a scale infestation but is recovering well). However, I’ve noticed that not a one of them will stand erect, their stalks all crawl along the ground like creepers. Are they trying to escape? Any advice would be appreciated (planted in Contra Costa county).
