FUCK WINSOR AND NEWTON. Fading lightfast garbage paint. Literally ruined my painting

((EDIT: please tell me an alternate brand and set that doesn’t disappear))

The second photo was taken today July 6th 2026. This painting isn’t even 1.5 years old and the pink has faded so significantly. At least 70%

This painting sat in a glass frame in a completely interior room with no sunlight at all

I’m so upset my paintings are ruined. Do NOT buy this shit and waste your effort on a painting that will wash out in 15 months

I’m ultra pissed about my paintings. And super pissed that I’ve spent a lot of money on this paint. Save yourself and never ever buy this

Back to painting landscapes from the perspective of psychosis.

This location could be anywhere in Nova Scotia, but the reference photo was taken pretty deep on the Eastern Shore on Saturday. I have such a soft spot for Nova Scotian lawns.

Help please!

I used watercolour and gouache for this painting but I feel like something is missing, it’s taken all of my strength to carry on with it I’ve put it down for the night but I want it to work so badly 😅 what would you do at this point to make it better?

It was my 30th birthday yesterday and I absolutely hate my birthday, I just feel like mine is always overlooked - people who should care don’t etc so I wanted to represent that in a painting.

Just moved, loving the new digs

I’ve just moved very close to our city centre. The houses are somewhat dilapidated but beautiful. I can’t wait to go for more walks, and do some more painting. :) I use alcohol ink on birch wood, then gouache over the top.

First gouache

First gouache (following @hannahartandprints tutorial) and I have to say I am not loving it, I found it difficult and hard to control… not sure if it is my paint or brushes but it’s been hard… any advice?

Context: I used to paint on and off, but only occasionally—probably just a couple of watercolors a year. As a kid, I liked painting, but I wasn’t especially talented at it. About a month ago, I started making a real effort to improve. I’ve been trying to paint one watercolor a day whenever possible and consuming a lot more art content. So far I’ve completed about 15 paintings this month, so I’ve been pretty consistent. And I tried making this first gouache yesterday!

I'm an expert in art materials. Ama?

I recently left my job because of a toxic work situation, and I genuinely miss helping customers find the products they're looking for. I also miss answering all those odd or quirky questions that crop up even with experienced artists.

I genuinely loved working in art supplies, and getting into the granular details of how different supplies worked. Since quitting I feel really underutilized mentally as I no longer have new customers that need help or old customers calling or emailing to ask questions I can help them navigate.

I don't intend to sound pretentious or like a know-it-all, but if anyone has any general, or even more esoteric, questions regarding art supplies I'd love to help!

I can answer questions regarding traditional watercolor, gouache, Japanese watercolor, acrylics, oils, watercolor pencils/crayons, brushes, paper, pencils, etc. I even have opinions about sharpeners. I also have a fairly robust understanding of art material historical context.

Tell me your issue you're running into or your question you've never asked(?)

Edit: misspelling

Trying to improve my use of colours- have any suggestions for me?

I'm trying to improve my use of colours in gouache (and other materials) and that was a study.

I liked very much this painting, loved the colours but think that the values are poor... and don't know how to correct that.

It's a challenge to think about colours and values

What advices you guys have for help me? Please, I will appreciate

Perfectionism is keeping me from painting

This is a mixed media gouache sketch from tonight in a sketchbook I made and I’m really not in love with it. Its hard for me not too be too precious about sketchbooks (no matter how cheap or expensive) and sometimes I find myself afraid to start but making my own sketchbook helped a little. Part of it is feeling like if I paint and it’s bad that I’ll have wasted my time. I know it’s not true but just seeing if anyone relates to this and maybe if anyone has tips on what has helped you?

Edit: Thank you all for your thoughtful responses! I’m going to save this for whenever I feel this way to look back it for ideas and encouragement.

I love the idea of looking at parts of the painting to practice on and making repeat thumbnails of the area that you want to improve on- I think this way it helps to see the progression and there isn’t as much pressure with the small size of the practice sketch or painting. Even little thumbnails practicing lighting or color schemes would be pretty interesting.

Columbian Ground Squirrel

Squirrels may be my gardening nemeses but dang they’re cute.

Tried a more illustrative look with the outlining, not sure if I’m sold yet but pretty happy with how this came out.
