Be Advised: Thousands of Runners Expected for Annual Beach to Bay Relay Marathon

One of the Largest Relay Marathons in the United States

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The City of Corpus Christi is preparing for the 49th Annual Beach to Bay Relay Marathon on Saturday, May 16. Over 10,000 runners and hundreds of spectators will participate in the event, one of the largest relay marathons in the United States. Beach to Bay, a not-for-profit organization, draws competitors from across the globe to honor those serving in the United States military and first responders.

Participants can run the 26.2-mile course in three ways: a six-runner relay, a two-runner relay, or a single runner completing the full marathon. The race will begin at 7:00 a.m. on the beach near the intersection of Elliff Road and Access Road 5 and ends at The Water’s Edge park at 402 S. Shoreline Boulevard.

THE ROUTE

Leg 1 will begin at the Intersection of Elliff Road and Access Road 5 and end at the Beach South of Bob Hall Pier (3.46 miles).

Leg 2 will begin at the Beach, South of Bob Hall Pier, and end at the north side of the JFK Causeway Bridge (4.67 miles).

Leg 3 will begin at the north side of JFK Causeway Bridge and end at Waldron Road near NAS Drive (4.36 miles).

Leg 4 will begin at Waldron Road near NAS Drive and end just outside the Naval Air Station Corpus Christi (NASCC) north gate on Ocean Drive (4.60 miles).

Leg 5 will begin just outside the NASCC north gate on Ocean Drive and end on the west side of Swantner Park (4.20 miles).

Leg 6 will begin on the west side of Swantner Park and end at the finish line at The Water’s Edge park (4.93 miles).

Significant traffic impacts are expected along Park Road 22, Intracoastal Bridge, JFK Causeway, NAS Drive, Ocean Drive, and Shoreline Boulevard as early as 4:00 a.m.

This includes dedicating one lane for runners along the course, closing Park Road 22 and the Aquarius Street intersection, and closing exits along SH 358 to the Intracoastal Bridge and Waldron Road. Closures along these routes aim to ensure the safety of the runners and spectators during the event. They will be removed on a rolling basis based on the direction of the Corpus Christi Police Department.

Safety is a top priority, so motorists are reminded to be aware of runners and to follow posted detour signs or seek alternate routes to avoid delays.

From the article regarding the water use:

"With a project of this size, questions about water usage are already being raised. According to project details, the facility will not rely on local water supplies for cooling. Instead, the data center will use a closed-loop cooling system, where water circulates through sealed piping. The system will be filled once using water sourced from outside Nueces County and is expected to remain in use for four to seven years without needing replacement. This means there will be no ongoing water draw from local sources for cooling operations.

Municipal water will only be used for everyday needs like restrooms and sinks. Officials estimate usage at about 10,000 gallons per day per phase, comparable to the daily water use of a small commercial business such as a restaurant."

Where the pilings are lighter is usually under water and the darker tops would be out of the water. Compare to the people in the shot.

From the article:

"The State of Texas has already issued a drought-related disaster proclamation that includes Nueces County, allowing for emergency response measures if needed.

They said the local declaration allows them to activate emergency plans and coordinate response efforts more quickly as conditions worsen.

The order takes effect immediately and will remain in place until the county judge formally lifts it."
