Do I putty this furnace hole?

Hi, we just turned on our AC unit for the first time this spring and my wife and I smell a sweet syrupy smell. My wife is worried about a refrigerant leak. I dont want to call a tech immediately because last two times I called them, all they did was hose my AC unit and charged me 2 hundred bucks.

It smells the strongest in basement next to furnace. On bottom right of the picture, cold air comes out when AC is on but there is no putty. The top two left corner has putty on them. Do I also need to cover the bottom right with putty here? Would it get rid of the sweet smell or do I have a leak? Thanks.
