My Vancouver basement is zoned for a suite — but I’m not sure if our house actually qualifies. Anyone go through this?
We’re planning to renovate our basement and turn it into a small rental unit to help with the mortgage, but I’m not sure if that’s even allowed in Surrey.
From what I’ve skimmed online, there are rules about secondary suites, permits, separate entrances, fire safety, egress windows, and so on. I’m genuinely not sure whether our house type is allowed to have a basement suite, and if it is, what kind of contractor we’d actually need.
Has anyone in Surrey gone through this recently? Any experiences with getting it approved, inspections, or working with a builder? Also, if it’s not allowed for our kind of house, I’d rather know now instead of wasting a ton of money and time.
