Self-Reporting an accident
On Saturday I was rear-ended by a couple in a huge dodge ram who did not seem to have appropriate car insurance - they told me "we just switched car insurance," which I don't believe is true. They seemed hesitant and even a little worried to do anything officially and I think it had to do with the fact that the driver may have been an undocumented immigrant. I can't confirm this, but he did not speak English; only his partner spoke to me and gave me her driver's license and phone number. He did not give any ID over.
My car is an.older sedan and the damage was cosmetic - I'd basically need a new bumper. However, I hit my head on the steering wheel and now, Monday, I'm fatigued and have neck pain (probably mild whiplash).
I sent her a text to ask if we could talk about figuring out a way to repair my bumper and if she would feel comfortable contributing to a repair without involving insurance (since she clearly didn't have any). No reply.
I don't want to file an insurance claim for my car knowing the premium will go up. We did not get police involved (I was exhausted , hungry, dehydrated and so unsure what to do that I just took the license plate, driver license pic and phone number) but now I feel like I need to document the event. Is it worth self reporting or am I SOL?
(Apologies if this post isn't written well as I'm struggling with fatigue even as I write.)
