New job problems
Recently got hired at a gas station, for reference this is in Illinois, and our gas station prepares pre cooked food nothing raw. With that being said, the place is absolutely disgusting, to the point I am genuinely embarrassed to be working there.
The problem is that we just had a surprise visit from the heath inspector and basically passed with flying colors. There were a few things that we were docked for, a leak on the ice machine, but I feel like if the health inspector had actually done their job we should be facing much larger issues.
Specifically, and the biggest issue I have is that nothing gets cleaned properly, food is not prepared in a sanitary environment, the soda machine spouts have not been rinsed or sanitized nor have the lines been flushed since I started a month ago and definitely before then, the slushy machines have been perpetually mixing slushy for just as long. There is thin layer of grease on just about everything, and I’d be really really surprised if I don’t start seeing bugs, fruit flys, and worse now that it’s warming up. The current employees have been enabled to the point they literally tell me I don’t need to be cleaning xyz.
I will give my fellow coworkers the benefit of the doubt that the closing staff is expected to do absolutely too much while the opening staff has zero responsibility what so ever, it’s very convenient that the only people who work the morning shift is our general manager, his buddy the assistant manager, and his daughter.
The main question I’d like answered is what I should do? I’ve considered setting up a meeting with the head of HR to talk about my concerns, however, I don’t know how far that will get me when the company itself, the GM, the AM, HR included are all part of the problem itself.
Evidently, the health inspector is just as lazy as everyone else.
I realize that the answer most people would have is just jump ship, but I have found it extremely difficult to find a job in my area. This is my community and I care about the people who come to this gas station, even if I do leave I feel a moral responsibility to server them how I would expect to be served, I do the best job I can with what I’ve been given it just stresses me out to the max to have no support.
