So about a week ago I hit a piece of a log after a bad storm. I had no way to avoid it. Since then I am fairly certain the rack and pinion were severely damaged. All the symptoms seem to point to that based on past experiences. I called a few local shops and the best quote I got was around $1700. Does that seem about right?
