Any high altitude tuning advice?
I’ve got this 1989 xr600r. I just can’t get it to start sometimes and there doesn’t seem to be any correlation to anything. I have the manual and set it to the tune the book suggested.
Main problem: bike will start first kick some days but no chance others. Once it’s warm it’s first kick. The biggest issue it seems to have is getting enough air to the carb. Brand new twin air filter not oiled, maxima oil, 10w-40 oil, no filter. None of it affects startup to make it easier.
Currently set at 2nd clip position, 150 main and 62 just put in 68 pilot to see if it helps (made no difference) and 10w-40 oil. Runs amazing but just won’t start. Ive had really good luck with 1st clip position from top, 130 main and 68 pilot with maxima oil on the filter. It just seems like it wasn’t getting enough air for that.
I’m at 4,600 feet elevation but often ride up too 6000. Overall just looking to have a reliable starting bike no matter the cost, modifications, or power. The bike was last registered in 97 so the motor is in great shape. All valves are in spec, great compression, but I can’t seem to see any spark even in pitch black garage. But it starts and runs great. Sometimes…
