How on earth do I paint these?? (Disastrous result for reference)
Hi all, I’ve tried everything. Light grey primer + normal painting or contrast blacks, black primer (and a light coat of rubber black over everything to take a way the shine cause I accidentally got a satin black primer, but anyway it’s one of the few things that help give texture to the minis), I’ve tried normal highlighting, using the brush like a sponge, etc.
Basically, I’m trying to get to the colors of the last pic for reference, black uniform coyote 498 vest, but I don’t know how to replicate the fabric and textyle like look of the advertised image. I’m not delusional I don’t imagine mine will turn out as good or anything, I’m just trying for the paint and shadows and highlights to look believably like fabric. I see on the webpage pic there’s a very natural but noticeable highlighting on the folds of the arms and the ridges of the draping in the pants. Also the best is surprisingly bright in colors but it looks like actual tactical gear/garments.
When I tried to use more saturated colors (I wanted a boot hide brown so I tried orange brown initially) it looked like clay, then as I did mixed that desaturated it, even went down to this coyote 498 or tan 499 it looked more like in the second image, my attempts to do some shading with lighter and brighter variations did nothing but make it look uneven and dirty and like the black undercoat was showing (it’s not).
So what kind of techniques and color mixes do you recommend I do to get to the first image? Thank you!
