An Announcement to Devs

Hey Devs,

We're aware of the automod going rogue the last couple weeks on the Sundays posts removing the Dev posts. I've reset the automod so we're hoping next week it will work as it's supposed to. If your post gets deleted, please message the sub and we'll get it back up. Sorry for the giant pain in the ass this has been!

Edit to add:

I have the developer of the automation we're using for Sundays looped in and he's going to check things out on his end to get it fixed. In the meantime, I added a note in the removal and the notification you get when selecting a dev flair reminding you we're having issues and to just message the sub if anything gets removed. Please message the subreddit itself, not me directly. For whatever reason, my DMs don't always notify me. If you don't get a response within a few hours, send it again please and thank you.

Reminder of Reddit rules

I'm sure a lot of us saw the post where the guy got banned from r/Lawncare and then proceeded to harass their kiss mods AGAIN after being banned. That's a Reddit rule, you can't try to start a fight between subreddits. Months ago we stopped cross posting from their sub because people can't play nice.

Guys, breaking reddit rules is a problem. It means we can stop existing. They can take the sub away. Most of you are awesome, never had an issue with you, you're amazing. But if you're thinking "it might be funny if..." Please at least ask yourself if it's going to violate any rules.

Thanks you to everyone who is just amazing and I've never has to send you a mod message. I like to mod by letting people have freedom. But there's only so much before we're out of my territory and into admin territory and no one wants that.

Comparison Chart Comments

Hello all, just looking for feedback and comments on the comparison chart. Is there a field you'd like to see? Do you find any of them particularly useless? Does it function as necessary?

Last updated 6/10/2026: Removed 2 budgets that don't exist anymore, verified pricing on several budgets, added a column for Budget Founded date per user request. Also updated the form to streamline input as well as add descriptions to clarify questions. Added an update log to the comparison chart in a separate tab so users can see chart updates.

Which alternatives really didn't work for you?

Which alternatives did you try that really didn't work for you? And why? Was it really different from YNAB? Or was the budget just bad?

Announcement: Recent changes

If you haven't read the last announcement, https://www.reddit.com/r/YNABAlternatives/s/Rsj547O6kb please do.

In addition to those changes we did go ahead and re-flair all the old posts. This makes searching by flair much more easy and useful for everyone. Tired of seeing all the Dev posts? Search the flair you're looking for.

For Devs: Reminder to keep your posts to Sunday. If you're looking for feedback, please use the "Budget Developer Feedback" flair.

For everyone else: We'd love to see some more discussions and success stories!

Way back YNAB has some awesome info

Hey all, I was doing some work on a wiki in another sub and was adding some content from archive.org from YNAB and wow, there's so much to look at from back in the day! Like this is what YNAB looked like a few years after I started using it. And yes kids, this is what the internet really did look like in 2004!

But my fascination and nostalgia isn't the only reason I'm posting this. I just wanted to let everyone know you can view the blog and most of the forums from way back then too as well as what learning tips and such are on the main website as well. There's so much good information that still applies today on the old websites that's a lot more buried on the new website or maybe doesn't even exist anymore.

Have fun exploring and let me know if you find anything really cool.

Wiki: YNAB via Archive.org

For those of us who used (or maybe still are using) YNAB back in the day, I did some crawling via archive.org and found some fun stuff from YNAB and added it to The Wiki.

A fun mention, yes kids the internet did look like this in 2004!

There was too much to add, so I included the YNAB archive search at the top labeled "source" so you can look yourself. There's a lot of neat and interesting things and I do remember a fair few of these homepages! As a note, if you go to the blog on any of the years, you can find some GOLD. For Example I included some of the rules and learning from 2005 and 2016 as links.

A change to how we do things regarding Budget Developers [MOD POST PLEASE READ]

Hello all,

We've gotten some feedback lately that this just seems to be a promotional sub for various different budgeting apps and that there's no real conversations or reviews on what budgets worked and didn't work and people are not finding this sub as helpful as it was intended.

To help work on that, we're limiting Budget Developer posts to Sundays only. If you post on a day that is not Sunday, your post will be removed. On top of that, if you are posting about a budget you've developed or want to develop, please stick around in the comments and answer questions, please share all the fun stuff about your budget, and definitely share screenshots.

For everyone who is not a dev, we highly encourage you to post about what budget software you use and why you like it and which one's you've tried and why they don't work for you. Share your experiences to help others find things they like.

User Flair: Another change is user flair. Anyone who has been identified as a Dev has a "Budget Developer" flair. There is also a "Budget Dev Contributor" flair for people who are only making apps and such to pair with an existing budget. You may see you have been assigned one of these flairs. If you are a dev, there is nothing you need to do. If you were given this flair in error, please message the mod team.

Post Flair: We have redone our post flairs they now include:

  • Discussion: For discussing budgets and finances without a specific question.
  • Searching for the right Budget: Where you can share your search journey, what you've tried, what you like, what you don't like.
  • Budget Success: Tell us your success story!
  • Comparing Budgets: If you want to talk about comparisons or ask others who have tried something you're looking to try how it compares to what you're using now.
  • Budget Development Feedback: This is for Devs only. Devs looking for feedback from users. (use only on Sundays)
  • Budget Development: This is for Devs only. Devs you can only use this flair on Sundays to share your budget.
  • Help: Stuck, confused, can't make something work, don't know where to begin? Ask for help!
