About NEW NIGHTMARE

While I personally like WES CRAVEN'S NEW NIGHTMARE, I understand why not every Freddy fan does. It was pitched at people who wouldn't watch an ordinary series entry on a bet, and while Robert Englund was once more allowed to play for serious menace, it has little to none of the humor that had become a part of Freddy's character. He's also mostly in the movie's third act.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child isn't THAT bad!

I've always thought that A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child has been unfairly slagged. It's got some imaginative effects and set design, Lisa Wilcox is still an effective Alice, Nick Mele's Mr. Johnson has evolved from drunk to the most positive parental figure of the first five films (only Hope Lang in the second is competition),and the point is made that inattentive or pushy parents do half of Freddy's work for him. And there is an attempt to return Freddy to his darker roots. And Stephen Hopkins gave the film a brooding Gothic atmosphere.

However, the movie still has issues. Englund had begun to play Freddy in a goofier fashion that didn't fit this movie well, the impact of Dan and Greta's deaths were lessened by MPAA mandated cuts, the ending just goes on longer than it needed to, and between four previous films and the television series, Freddy had become overexposed. And the script may have needed JUST ONE MORE draft.
