(No) Tip Shaming

I placed an online order for a carryout salad from a local restaurant. I prepaid online, put -0- for the tip. The restaurant cashier handed me a receipt to sign with the obligatory line for a tip. While writing -0- on the tip line, the cashier audibly said “wow that’s a lot”. No one else was nearby so it was definitely directed towards me. I gave him the stink eye.

As I was leaving I thought of the minimum wage job that I had at a sub shop in high school. I never received a single tip nor was one expected. Imagine standing there at a cash register expecting each customer to pay you extra for doing your f’ing job.
