Beginner ultra-runner knee pain after increasing mileage — runner’s knee or overload?
recently started running consistently (currently week 2 of training for longer distances/ultra eventually).
I’m around 87kg with flat feet and I’ve been using 4-year-old worn running shoes.
After a 7.6km easy/long run I started getting mild knee pain around the kneecap area. It’s not constant — it comes and goes depending on movement/steps.
I noticed I was running with a very narrow gait (almost like both feet were landing on the same line). When I slightly widened my stance, the pain improved a lot.
I sometimes feel it going downstairs too, but there’s no major swelling, locking, or instability.
Does this sound more like early runner’s knee/patellofemoral irritation from overload + mechanics?
I’m already taking a couple recovery days and replacing the shoes.
