Upgraded from Shure M75 to AT 540ML

Upgraded from Shure M75 to AT 540ML

Follow-up to my last post where I was asking for a needle for my Shure M75. At last, I took u/el_tacocat 's advice and went for a new cartridge.

After a bit of digging, I decided for an Audio-Technica 540ML, which has an even higher compliance than the VM95ML he recommended, and can be screwed from below, although I ended up using passthrough screws anyway. My guess is that, at some point, my father could have drilled the upper holes in the headshell to mount another cartridge, as in all pictures I've seen of either Skylab or the original Transcriptor Saturn, the cartridge is screwed from below. It should be said that he had it in the 70's, while there was a dictatorship in Spain and I guess that some things may have been harder to find. And he used it professionally at the time, so he may just have patched it however he could.

Anyway, it's been a ride and I learnt a lot. I had to remove a big plastic shim that was glued to the headshell and raise the arm's pivot so the arm rested flat to the disc (see both pictures). But the end result is worthwhile. The overall sound quality has improved dramatically, even for my tone-deaf ears. So thank you all for your insight!

A few weeks ago I damaged the original Shure N75 needle I had in my turntable while I was cleaning it. I replaced it with a Tonar 387DS, which has a much steeper angle (see first picture). Also, it seems to introduce more background noise, although it's subjectice and I can't compare now.

Am I missing something? Any further adjustment that I should do?

The turntable is a KM System Skylab 1.
