Was making a review of my turntable and this happened. Did I just damage my stylus? I mean, the sound is still fine after this happen so...

Was demonstrating the auto stop feature and I moved the arm too close to the end accidentally. Did I damage the stylus?

Record is Mark Morrison - Return Of The Mack (25th Anniversary)

Welp, I’m an idiot

Okay, as you read in the title, I admit to being an idiot. So I would really appreciate it if we could refrain from shitting on me or making some sort of snarky comment about my very spontaneous and uneducated purchase of a turntable.

Soooo-, now that I got that out of the way, I am currently turning to this thread in search of some advice and recommendations, pleaseeee be nice.

I am currently heavily depressed. My mom’s dying, I’m a single mom with three kids under 8 in my early 30s, I work in education in NYC (aka one of the toughest jobs ever), and I’m pretty sure the Earth is burning to the ground. I’ve been struggling a lot with addiction & depression, and I had this random idea today to attempt to make me feel better….

I purchased a turntable.

For backstory’s sake, I’ve owned three turntables in the past. My first one was a gift from my mom (which is what I think led to this purchase…), and it was lost after we lost our home years ago. I mean, like, teenager-level years ago. My next one was from Urban Outfitters, and then my final one was from Amazon (I know, I know… dumb). I have no knowledge of turntables. If you placed the best turntable on the market next to one that was a soft pink, cheaply made one, I’d probably choose the lesser one.

That being said, I purchased an Audio-Technica AT-LP70XBT-BZ (Silver/Black). Why this brand or model? I don’t know. It seemed in style with some of the DJs I love who use turntables & I felt like Urban Outfitters wasn’t the place to go this time around. Now, here’s where I fudged up, I did very little research (literally just relied on reviews) & I didn’t realize this turntable needs speakers!!!!

HEY! I SAID DON’T MAKE FUN OF ME!
Are you done?
It’s not that funny….
Okay- so, now that you’re done laughing at me…

I ask you the professionals, what do you suggest?
- Do I keep it? If so, can you recommend some affordable, quality speakers?
- Should I return it? If so, can you recommend a turntable with quality built-in speakers?

If you’ve read this far, you’re a real one, here’s a cookie 🍪

Very distorted audio

Hi all, I just got this L-3866USB after my Sansui unfortunately died down. I expected it to maybe be a downgrade but still playable. My setup consists of a Philips FA564 and B&W Vision speakers. I tried the Lenco out today and unfortunately the sound produced is way too distorted and sounds like a deepfried meme. Is there an easy way to identify the problem? Is it the needle of this used Lenco player, or could it be my speaker cables? (They have ‘loose copper wires’ (?) at the end but they worked fine with my Sansui. Im a bit of a noob still so thanks for any help! :)

Orange Peel Turntable

One of my relatives gave this to me today. I thought it looks pretty cool. I have my own setup and wasn’t planning on using it. Any information about it or servicing it might be useful

Tonearm moving away

As the video shows my TP 16 MK3 tonearm on a Thorens TD 126 MK3 electronic keeps moving away from the disk. This happens no matter counterweight and tracking force settings. The anti-skate is set to 0 in the video and increasing it worsens the problem. I have tried adjusting the suspension. What could this be? I suspect a problem with the magnetic anti-skate, but I have no idea how to fix it.

Edit: In the video the counterweight and tracking force are not correctly set up, but the problem remains even with correct setup

Recently discovered the world of better cartridges. What should I upgrade my Fluance RT-82 to?

Bought my Fluance RT-82 before the pandemic and upgraded the OM10 stylus to OM20, and now that one's wearing out.

I was thinking of an upgrade to the OM20 or a lateral move, but after some research, it seems that I may have maxed out on the quality of my Fluance RT-82. I've seen posts that do not recommend buying medium or high end cartridges since the Fluance tonearm is not that good.

If that's the case, what turntable should I upgrade to? I'm fine with either direct or belt drive. My budget would be around $600-$700

would this be a good starter player?

Hi! so i’ve been collecting records for a while and have some awesome ones but our current record player we own SUCKS we have two, the other one i need to test again but they’re both on the cheaper budget side im pretty sure (mine was a gift, my boyfriends his parents bought) and just horrible skip the tracks even with the vinyl and needle being clean etc horrible audio quality i have demon days by gorillaz and i played that record last night it sounded HORRID lol its a victorla or whatever so i should’ve expected it

if anyone has budget friendly record players they could recommend id be so grateful! i don’t need the end all be all but just something that works and makes them sound good my budgets prob around 250- 300 (if it’s a pretty color and everything) at most :) thank you guys

Advice: Buying a JVC L-A10 for $75. Exploring options for setup

Looking to buy a set up for my boyfriend for his birthday, he's collected a bunch of vinyls but has been borrowing a turntable to listen. I just need a beginner set up, and looking for some affirmation that I'm buying something good.

The JVC L-A10 is for $75 and I can buy a Vintage Realistic STA-75 IC/FET FM/AM stereo receiver from the same buyer for $100. I'd still need passive speakers to add to everything.
Should I buy active speakers instead of the receiver? (many of them online seem really big or expensive, I think he'd prefer something small) or is it worth it to scrap it and buy a turntable that's all in one for the sake of a simple set up and budget?

Still new and learning a lot about turntables and audio, Thanks for your help!:)

Ortofon Quintet Blue Upgrade?

Any ideas? I’m in the market for a new cartridge, and wondering if I should just enact the Ortofon exchange program or shop for something else.

It’ll be attaching to a Rega RB250 tonearm on an acoustic solid machine small turntable -> McIntosh MA8950-> B&W 805s speakers with a REL s/510 sub.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Is this sound normal for a Audio Technica AT-LP3XBT Turntable or is it something else?

Its a creaking sound. Is it normal or what? Is the arm uneven / to low or is it just the vibrations of the motor getting caught? I just ordered a record dampen thing in case it was the vibrations. I don't wanna continue using it until I get some answers

EDIT: I adjusted the weight just a tiny bit and it stopped making the sound : )

The problem was the cartage was touching the record

I messed up.

The other day I accidentally dropped the tonearm on the rubber mat (just wanted to clean the stylus and my finger slipped off of the headshell handle on the side, also forgot to raise the cue lever) and it bounced a couple of times. Also, I guess I have put some sideways pressure on it while trying to grab it. Anxious rookie mistake, I know.

Thought not much of it, then came back to this view yesterday while putting on a record 🥲 The turntable is fairly new, so I was trying to stave off the itch to get a better stylus, and just enjoy it, but I guess it is time for an upgrade?

What’s the consensus on a U-Turn Orbit as a second table for a long time collector?

I generally try to refrain from asking these types of questions on subs but here I am. When people talk about these tables I see them referred to as good starter units. I’ve been into vinyl for over 25 years and have a very substantial, well taken care of collection. Been running a Technics SL-1200 mk2 for so long I barely ever look at turntables. If it died I’d be looking at a new Technics and that’s that. But…

Wife wants to put a new turntable in the living room. I have a spare amp and some B&W speakers in the garage, so all we’d need is a turntable. She’s had a Crosly in there she’s had since before I met her which I refuse to put records on so this is basically her meeting me in the middle. It would be a clear second setup for me and would be mostly for her. She wants to keep it cheap and probably cares more about aesthetics than sound quality, but I still want to be comfortable playing my records on it.

So I’m looking at a green U-turn Orbit with an Ortofon OM-5e and arm lever upgrade. I showed it to her and she thinks it’s cute and works for her design. She’s no audiophile but she has a bunch of records and loves music. I know she’ll be fine with it. But my rub is, when it comes to audio gear, I personally ascribe to the maxim buy nice or buy twice. So I have a pretty substantial collection of high quality audio playback and music production gear I have acquired over the years and am used to dealing with quality gear.

My question is basically, will this turntable be good enough for me to use occasionally and not want to replace for the next 10-20 years? Is it reasonably nice quality and will the sound be sufficient? I’m not looking for audiophile sound here, I already have good enough for me.

I basically just want to make sure it won’t be a piece of shit that falls apart and makes me want to buy another in five years.

Edit: thanks everyone for the opinions on it. Went ahead and ordered a U-turn Orbit custom with an OM-5e and a cue lever upgrade.

yamaha p-200 setup

I got a yamaha p-200 along with a pair of yamaha speakers a long time ago and have finally had the space to bust it out. However, I’m not very experienced with turntables that require dedicated preamps and amplifiers. What would be the best setup regarding those two components and where is a good place to purchase them?
