She’s big and chonky…

…but she’s mine now. Stumbled on this massive SL-1100a locally last week. I wasn’t looking for one but after switching to an SL-1700 mk1 as my daily driver I couldn’t pass it up. Probably paid too much but damn. 30 pounds of tank. If I were to guess this guy has been sitting in a garage for a decade at least. Spins up and holds speed just fine of course but haven’t gotten further than that. Only thing missing is the tonearm clip, and there’s no signs of damage, just expected wear. It’s a project for sure but should be pretty sweet when she’s up and running. No dust cover but since these didn’t have a mounted cover anyway it’s not great loss.
Now I have 2 questions for the hive mind - first, if anyone has any experience with these please share. Second, this platter has seen some things. I hit it with some Brasso which made a dent but if anyone has experience bringing back a platter with heavy corrosion I’m all ears. Thanks!

Going to look at an sl-1100a….

Meeting up this afternoon to check it out. If anyone has any experience with one of these I would appreciate any advice on what to be looking out for. I have experience with other Technics DDs but it’s my first time with one of these beasts.

Serious question

Ok, so I have a serious turntable issue - I have several vintage tables already and definitely didn’t need another but this SL1700 popped up on fb a few weeks back and I couldn’t resist. $150. Very clean but wouldn’t spin up. Dirty pots was all. Anyway - to my other tables, an HK t35c, Philips 212 and a Micro Seiki dd25. Nothing crazy but all good quality. Why the hell then does this thing sound so GOOD in comparison to my other tables?? This deck is crazy solid and stable - does it make that much of a difference? and yes, before you say it yes I know that cartridge choice has a lot to do with it and I need to sit down and do a fair comparison to say for sure, but still, the difference is pretty damn noticeable.

Alright, I’m calling it…

It’s officially a Feel Good Friday. Starting it off with a bit of joyful Ramsey Lewis and Earth, Wind & Fire. Time to smile.

Fresh off the bench…

Just wrapped up work on this new-to-me Technics SL1700 mk1 semi-auto table. What a gem. Built like a tank and really only needing a good cleanup and lube to get back in service. Currently running an NOS Grace F8 cartridge. Lovely. This one will likely still be happily chugging along long after I’m gone ;)

Ferro fluid replacement

Hi all, I recently came into a pair of ADS L300s. Condition is pretty sketchy so I’m considering them a project. Woofers seem solid but the tweeters are definitely sounding a bit tired. Considering the overall cosmetic condition I don’t really see me doing the Richard So treatment so I was wondering if anyone can tell me how easy/tricky doing a ferro fluid replacement would be? I plan on rebuilding the crossovers as well but I don’t see any difficulties there. Advice?

New Maines

New this week. I’ve been looking for a pair of sandal-based shoes but haven’t been ready to commit to Montanas (yet :) These are perfect. On sale currently on the Birk site as well!

Reflections

Well, since we’re sitting at our gate at SNA and our flight back to Chicago is delayed it feels like a good time to post some shots from the trip. Thanks for having me!

Latest estate sale pickup

Sony STR-6065. Really well built 50w circa 70-74. Still need to run the serial numbers to confirm the build year. Pretty clean and after the first inspection it’s looking like a good cleaning will be enough to get it running. Looking forward to hearing how this guy sounds…

Estate Sale find o’ the day

Local sale this morning - they had a McIntosh ma5100 integrated amp along with a Sony receiver and some newer 90’s separates. Got there early enough to have my pick but they knew what they had with the McIntosh and priced it higher than I was willing to go, but they slept on this Sony.
Couldn’t make an ID from the fuzzy pics but found out it was a pretty clean str-6065 and I grabbed it up. Will need lots of cleaning at the least but I’ve wanting to mess with one of these early 70’s Sonys for a while.
If anyone has any with these and can help shed light on what I should watch for please fill me in. I’ll be sure to post a follow up with images and details once I get it on the bench. ✌️

BPC this is not.

Whew. Saw this ADS stack show up in a local estate sale and was lucky enough to grab it when they opened. Circa 1986 ADS/Braun Atelier line. Heavy bastards. 50wpc amp along with a tuner and cassette deck. Cassette deck is a motor driven tray that will run all functions open or closed.
Everything seems to be functioning from what I can tell on first inspection but it will need the controls cleaned as the pots are a bit sketchy. I honestly wasn’t on the prowl for new gear and this is a bit newer than my other stuff but I am digging it. I’l clean it all up and let the dust settle before I make the call on if it all gets sold or I keep it.
Btw - is there an ADS subreddit? I haven’t been able to find one yet but I suspect there must be one. 🤷‍♂️
