EPI 100s update

Update on my $20 goodwill find from a couple weeks ago. My foams from Rick Cobb showed up in just a few days as usual but the caps took a while so during the wait I re foamed the drivers and freshened the cabinets, the drivers were the easiest to re foam ever took a couple hours at most the glue that was used on them was easy to remove and the cones are quite tough this made for quick removal of the old foam I used the tone CD for voice coil alignment and I’m pretty pleased with the results, just as everyone commented on my last post these EPIs sound quite nice good bass and wonderful highs the tweeter is definitely the star of the show here.

Carver worth it?

Seller near me wants $350 for the stack and says it all works well. I'm not really familiar with Carver and wonder if this is worth it. I'd be using a pair of Paradigm Titan V2s and a Panasonic SL-pd346 CD player. I have a Sherwood RV4050R already and it's fine, but I saw this and got tempted.

Japanese Sansui in Canada

Hey all! I recently bought this Sansui AU/TU-5500 and discovered that it was a Japanese import (I’m in Canada). So I need to alter the incoming power to suit the units. What are your thoughts on step-down transformers and/or power plant regenerators?

SANSUI AU-417 Full Restoration – Part 2: Progress Update

Here’s Part 2 of the AU-417 full restoration I posted about a couple of weeks ago. The shop owner just sent me an update with these photos. It turns out the amp was in much worse condition than I expected, but I think they’re doing a pretty amazing job for $280. Curious to hear what you guys think.

Identifying this tube amp?

This tube amp is in an a vintage Montgomery Ward stereo console. Wondering if anyone can ID it? Just wanting to see if it would be worth picking up for free to try to tinker with.

Replaced our TV with vintage audio

We moved our TV out of our living room to our bedroom upstairs as we wanted to have a screen free family room/playroom for our toddler. We really want to listen music more often and have been interested in vinyl. I did some research and decided to buy from someone who does restoration in my area. Picked out a Technics SL-5300 turntable, Pioneer ES-2000, NAD 523 for CDs and a pair of Pioneer CS-66 speakers. It all sounds and looks so beautiful and I'm super excited to be able to share music and fun adventures hunting for vinyls and CDs with kiddo. I had a Philips AZ-2750 as a teen and have such fond memories of it, hoping to recreate that for him.

The creator of home Theatre

Jokingly, I would almost take the credit for the creation of home theater. Back around 1976 I got a good paying job and had some extra money for stereo equipment. I bought an Akai receiver, BIC Formula 4 speakers, a cheap turntable and a 19 inch Quasar color TV. I can’t remember exactly but the TV had a jack on the back which may have been an RCA or headphone outlet. I either purchased or made up a cable to connect it to my receiver. At the time, I thought it sounded pretty good. Mom didn’t like it because I was upstairs and those BIC’s could really drive the bass!

Veneered my Pioneer PL-516

Decided I couldn't live with the off silver vinyl anymore.

So, I veneered the plinth in American black walnut, applied fresh decals and gave it lots of coats of nitrocellulose lacquer as used on strat guitars.

Love how it has turned out.

This Small KENWOOD Speaker Wasn't What I Expected

I expected this little KENWOOD speaker to shine with jazz vocals and acoustic music.

Instead, it surprised me in a completely different way.

Its fast, lively sound made pop music far more enjoyable than I ever expected.

Sometimes a speaker turns out to be something completely different from what you imagined.

What's the best small speaker you've ever owned?

Picked up this SX-690 today

Picked up this SX-690 for 200 today. Faceplate is in ok condition and I’ll end up redoing someone’s attempt at vinyl wrapping. One of the STKs wasn’t good as it was giving crackling to the right channel. Luckily I have spares and it plays fine now.

It will go nice with its big brother my SX-890. Gonna sell the SX-680 I just recapped and will be looking out for the 590 and 790 next.

Help with integrating modern and vintage hifi systems

Hi all, just joined and looking for some advice before I spend any money.

Some background. I had an old 80s, silver faced Technics in the mid/late 90's running large Technics floor speakers, for DJing (1200's) and general music listening. Had to sell the lot for financial reasons. Love listening to a wide range of music, from punk and alt rock to dub, and modern electronica.

In a much better financial position now, so wanting to modestly invest in a new (for me) hifi system. I prefer buying secondhand where possible, and live in an area where there are a few decent options.

We have a Polk Audio soundbar and woofer which we might hold onto for TV and Movie watching. We also use an Apple TV for streaming shows and some music. It feels like adding a vintage amp and speakers presents some challenges.

Amp options include Plinius 2100i, Kenwood KA-405, or the more modern Audiolab 6000a. Open to other suggestions. Speakers unsure at this stage so open to recommendations.

So, how would you go about running an Apple TV through the amp for music or the soundbar for TV/movies?

The space we have is an open plan living/dining/kitchen about 50m2, but the watching/listening will be about 3-4m from the speakers. The amp/speakers need to be strog enough to fill the space though so we can listen at the dining table of in the kitchen.

What other things should I consider?

I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance for your advice :)

Looking for some opinions from the vintage audio community.

I recently inherited my grandfather's Marantz separates:

Model 150 Tuner
Model 3600 Preamplifier
Model 510M Power Amplifier

They've been sitting unused for at least 20 years, but I'm in the process of having them restored. Aside from their sentimental value, I'm excited to hear what they're capable of once they’ve been serviced.

On the analog side, I recently picked up an immaculate Michell GyroDec from the original owner. It's one of those pieces I've wanted for a long time, and I'm looking forward to pairing it with the restored Marantz system. My speakers are Tekton Electrons.

The reason I'm posting is that I recently visited a respected local audio repair shop to discuss servicing the Marantz gear. During our conversation, the technician suggested that the GyroDec deserved more modern electronics and seemed skeptical that the Marantz separates would be a good long-term match.

That got me thinking.
For those of you with experience listening to both restored vintage separates and modern high-end equipment, would you restore and enjoy the Marantz system, or would you move toward something newer to get the most out of the GyroDec?

I'm genuinely interested in hearing real-world experiences from people who've lived with this kind of equipment. Thank you!

Wasted no time snagging this off of Facebook.

Sony STR-6046A Everything works but the fine tune needle meter. And every bulb works. I just need to give it a good bath.

Viking console restomod

Inherited a 1960s Viking stereo console (old Canadian brand sold out of Eaton’s, a big department store). I love the look of the furniture piece and want to equip with more modern equipment (turntable, amp, and Bluetooth functionality).

I’m not an audiophile so don’t need top of the line, but I do enjoy listening to great music loud.

I really want to diy this as much as possible but I know nothing of nothing when it comes to audio equipment. A local shop can do it but ball parked me at $1000 over the phone.

Curious to get the group’s thoughts on what your recommendation is. I’m comfortable learning new things and trying, but I need resources to help me do it right.
