She’s big and chonky…

…but she’s mine now. Stumbled on this massive SL-1100a locally last week. I wasn’t looking for one but after switching to an SL-1700 mk1 as my daily driver I couldn’t pass it up. Probably paid too much but damn. 30 pounds of tank. If I were to guess this guy has been sitting in a garage for a decade at least. Spins up and holds speed just fine of course but haven’t gotten further than that. Only thing missing is the tonearm clip, and there’s no signs of damage, just expected wear. It’s a project for sure but should be pretty sweet when she’s up and running. No dust cover but since these didn’t have a mounted cover anyway it’s not great loss.
Now I have 2 questions for the hive mind - first, if anyone has any experience with these please share. Second, this platter has seen some things. I hit it with some Brasso which made a dent but if anyone has experience bringing back a platter with heavy corrosion I’m all ears. Thanks!

Technics SH-GE70 & SU-VX500

Much demand for Technics 1200 Mk2s these days?

I’ve got a pair of Technics 1200 Mk2s that have been sat in their boxes now for years. Depresses me that they are just doing nothing. Wondering how much demand there still is for these in 2026? Has everyone moved on?

First bought approx 20 years ago, one brand new and one in very good used condition, and used mainly for scratching. There are some superficial marks etc on the outside casing, but as far as I know everything was working flawlessly the last time they came out of the box. How should I go about testing them? What are the common failures, etc?

Should I get them refurbed before attempting to sell, or sell as is? How much generally should I expect them to be worth in either case?

Disappointed with Bose (QuietComfort Ultra Gen 1)

This isn't my first set of QuietComforts, but I've been quite disappointed with Bose. Recently, the eartip (that the silicone bit is attached to) came off while it was in my ear. It was weird, because I just put the earbud in as usual but it came off and got stuck in there. Not pleasant, and took a bit of prying to get it out, but not the end of the world.

I thought it was the silicone at first, but it looks like the adhesive failed so the plastic bit at the end detached. No plastic was broken. I expected it would be an easy fix, but Bose were atrocious to deal with.

Firstly, I do accept I was just outside my guarantee period; I expect if it was still covered it would have been dealt with. However, I'm in the UK and we have some very decent consumer protection laws. A 2.5 year old £300 pair of earbuds shouldn't be deemed unusable because of an adhesive failure.

Bose do that nasty thing where they make it very difficult to actually talk to anyone. You fill in a form describing your issue, then they offer you a new set of earbuds with a small discount. You don't have an option to raise a ticket, etc. I don't feel that I should pay to fix their poor QC (!) and failure in such a short period of time should not be accepted.

I finally found a phone number (got it through John Lewis, but that's another story). Customer service agent was great (I appreciate that he called me back when the call got cut off), but they'd only offer me an extra 30% discount. Honestly, I'd consider it, but how do I know the new set won't just fall apart like this one, and it quite frankly feels a bit insulting that they'd ignore our statutory rights.

I did like the earbuds. The ANC was perfect for me, particularly as I ride the tube and fly a lot, and it's comfortable yet cancels out most background noise. Call performance is terrible though, and this has been the case for every Bose QC model I've owned. It's essentially unusable for the other party, if there's any background noise at all (annoying when the ANC means I can't hear the noise myself).

I rotate between three devices: QC2 and Sony WF-1000XM5 earbuds, and B&O Beoplay H95 headphones. Is there another device that could replace my QC2? I'm looking for something with excellent ANC (the Sony's don't cut it on the Tube) and usable in-call performance (Bose is rubbish). GPT recommends Technics AZ100. Does anyone have experience with this? I don't have a budget so I'm willing to pay more for a brilliant product.

My Technics Gear/Setup

Hi everyone, I just joined Reddit and I’m looking forward to exploring communities like this and seeing people’s equipment. I thought I would share my set up. There are some non-Technics gear but the crux of my setup is the Concise C01 system compromising of the:

- Technics SH-C01 Pulse Power Supply
- Technics SE-CO1 Power Amplifer
- Technics SU-CO1 Preamplifier
- Technics ST-C01 Tuner (AM + FM Stereo)
- Technics RS-M03 Cassette Deck
- Technics SL-10 Turntable

I also have a boxed set of EAH-230 Headphones and a boxed, never used pair of SB-F1 speakers with the matching SH-S1 stands.

Technics dv290

So after months of scouring the internet I've managed to find an immaculate pair of dv290 speakers, I have the eh790 separates ( the top model) and have struggled to find a pair of speakers there all normally destroyed or have failed tweeters and are all over priced, but I managed to pick these up for £30 yes I know it's not the best thing ever but I've honestly wanted it since I was a kid. Best midi system of the early 2000's? I think so !

Technics SL40CBT - Build Quality Issues?

From the Technics website discussing the high precision tonearm.

While minimising the tonearm base size, the design inherits the traditional S-shape and ensures high tracking performance via micron-level precision engineering.

The tonearm bearings are very loose straight out of the box. Much worse than any Hanpin turntable I’ve owned previously.

This doesn’t seem like micron-level precision engineering to me.

TLDR - Technics SL40CBT feels very cheap and extremely loose tonearm bearings.
