Dead databack?

Dead databack?

Hey guys,
I got this Program back 70 for with a 7000AF maybe a month ago…

The day I got it, I put in some LR44 batteries and it worked… I set the time, date, etc. and put it on the shelf until I went out shooting…

When I wanted to try tge print function out maybe a week later, the Back was frozen - no response at all even though the date was correct… 3 days later, still the same date, and no response…

Maybe 2 weeks after that I forgot the camera with the back equipped in the car overnight (cold at night > hot in the morning/afternoon when I took the camera out to go shooting) and it worked again for a few minutes… The date was set back to 1.1.’85, but it was responsive again and I put on Print… Then it went dull again… I’m going to be putting the “Printed” roll to lab tomorrow to see if the back actually printed anything on the photos…

Rationally I thought that it was just batteries… I just put new Energizers in and the back didn’t even turn on… Up until I took the batteries out the display was at least showing something, but nothing is happening now…

Is it fixable?

Thanks!

Collection advice

Hey guys,
I think that I somewhat by mistake became a Minolta collector and I’ve became fairly addicted to it…

(Not so) Little storytime:
My main interest has always been cars, more specifically classic cars… I currently own 2 1980’s Mercedes, one of which was bought new by my great uncle, which also owned 2 Minoltas that found their way to me aswell, as no one else in the family was interested in them… A Minolta Hi-Matic F, with which I actually played with since I was a child, and a recently discovered 7000i.
Being into old cars, and old stuff in general, I almost naturally wanted to try out analog photography, so about 2 years ago I fixed the Hi-Matic by soldering a spare wire, as the original one got eaten away by battery acid, and off I went… Due to the limitations of my repair (camera draining the batteries even when not in use), I didn’t get to shoot many photos, maybe 4 rolls… But maybe 3 months ago my dad gave me the other camera - the 7000i, which works perfectly, came with a flash and even an unfinished film inside!
I shot that along with 2 more rolls, and discovered that an even cooler Minolta exists - the original 7000 - I found one for fairly cheap with a lens I wanted so it was a must have at that point… And just like that I bought another 7000AF because of it’s accessories (AA grip, databack)…

My current situation is this:
Partly working Hi-Matic F
7000i
Got and sold a 500si
Two 7000 AFs
And an AFZ (because the SLRs were impractical for certain situations where I wanted to shoot film)

Lenses:
50 f1.7, 28-85 f3.5-4.5 Macro, 35-70 f4 Macro, Exakta 35-70 and a 75-300 f4.5-5.6…

BUT

I was in a photo shop about 2 weeks ago and fell in love with the looks of the X-700… I think that it would compliment my collection very well, but they’re fairly expensive compared to my other cameras and are incompatible with any of my lenses… However I’ve heard that the Rokkor lenses for the SR mount are amazing, so that’s a bonus…

What would you advise me to do? I feel like I’m going a little overboard with this analog photography thing but it just brings me so much joy, even despite the costs…

Thanks for any advice or even just for making it this far into my call for help🤣🤣

Best regards,
M

Vertical viewfinder for the 7000 AF / 7000i?

Hey guys,
I’ve been in multiple situations, where I needed to shoot so low, that I just wasn’t able to use the viewfinder…

I’ve seen that some cameras allow you to remove the pentaprism and tranform the area under it into a viewfinder. I cannot imagine my Minoltas doing that, as there is no seam under the viewfinder lump, so is there an accessory that would allow me to see through the camera when looking at it from above?

Picture taken from google

Fujicolor 400 replacements?

Hey guys,
I love the Fujicolor 400’s colors, but unfortunately, they’ve just repackaged Kodak Ultramax, so they’re way more colorful and yellow, whereas the Fuji was toned more towards green, which I found cool…

Are there any films with very similar styles?

Thanks!

Fujicolor 400 x Minolta AFZ

I am impressed by how good the pictures are from this little 80’s Point-and-shoot, especially since most were taken in almost pitch black darkness!

Is it worth it to self develop film?

Hey guys!
As we all know, film photography is relatively expensive, so I was wondering if self developing film would be a great money saving strategy…

I think that I’d still have to get it lab digitalized, as I think that my iPhone would butcher the images when using one of these mobile film scanners… And I cannot financially justify buying a (what I think is) good film scanner for approx. 250$…

My local lab charges 5.50$ (2.75$ if you buy the film from them, which I usually do) to develop and 7$ to digitalize. It usually takes a week or two before I get the results, so self-developing would probably shorten the wait, which is also a great benefit

Would it be worth it to buy the chemicals and other equipment and do it myself?

Thanks!

Motor oil recommendations

Hey guys,
I need to change the motor oil in both my 260E and 190E 1.8 and don’t know which one will be the best to use…

I think that 15W-50 would be the best viscosity as I use the cars mostly from spring to autumn with only occasional drives when the weather gets nice in winter…

I want higher viscosity as I like to drive them real fast on the highway, which also means very high RPM…

Currently running Liqui Moly 10W-40 MoS2 in the 260E and MOL 10W-40 in the 190E… I always change the oil after 10 000km or a little sooner…

Thanks for your suggestions!

Apart from some sort of lense sync issue, where it hits either infinity or the lowest focus without noticing and grinding due to the fact (can be fixed by switching to Manual focus and adjusting the focusing ring further away from the direction the camera grinds at, then switching back to AF), it has no apparent issues… Just noticed this odd looking hole (2 actually) and I can’t wrap my head around how it could’ve happened… Definitely wasn’t caused by me…

Share you theories please 🤣🤣

Or any ideas on the grinding issue 😅😆

Hey guys!
I’ve noticed that my new 35-70 + Macro Minolta A-Mount lens’ aperature operates much more softly and relatively slowly compared to my other A-mount lenses which often close the aperture fairly aggressively…

Should I do something about it or is it okay?

I’m a relatively handy person when it comes to delicate work, but I can use advise as I have no experience with lens cleaning/service…

Please don’t tell me to throw it away and buy a different one because they’re cheap 🤣🤣

Thanks!

Hey👋

I just got into photography and would love to share my favorite pictures so far. I would love any help from you guys as I’m not all that satisfied with my results - I want my photos to capture the atmosphere better and make them more dreamy or even a bit abstract. I especially love night pictures, but I live in an area with either ugly white LED street lights or better no lights at all… How do you solve this issue? Are there some battery powered warm colored lamps you use for night photography? Thanks!

Hey guys,

I’ve noticed that some pictures have this dreamy look which I love, but mine don’t - mine are very sharp and often too sterile… How do I achieve such dreamy look like in the picture I attached (borrowed from Pinterest by Nearlyfriendly)? I assume it was taken on film but should give you a picture of what I’m talking about even if it wasn’t…

How do I achieve this dreamy look besides the scene? I think that the core of the dreamy look is light glow and slight unfocus (along with the whole picture being toned to one color, in this case pink)?… Is this achieved by a filter or is there more to it (Tungsten film etc.) or is post editing a necessity?

Thanks!🙏

Hey guys, just got this AFZ that appears to be in all-around good condition, however it appears like the AF isn’t working as it does not make any noise when the trigger’s half pressed… The shutter and film motor work…

Is it broken or is it just fixed focus or a miraculous 80’s silent AF system?😅

I need it to work by Thursday
